Tiny homes scams
Green Terra Homes who built tiny homes turns out to be a scam
https://www.ctvnews.ca/canada/i-trus...ands-1.4286726
Quote:
Garbage bags cover the bedroom windows to keep the chilly air at bay. There is siding taped to the house to prevent it from falling off on a windy day. Water damage is visible throughout the interior. There are electrical problems and the insulation is so poor that ice forms on the inside of the walls.
The entire building itself tilts to one side because it was misplaced on top of the foundation.
It was supposed to be the dream home Max Martinez had always wanted for his wife Joselyn Barrera and his three children.
Instead, he spent $135,000 on an unsafe prefabricated steel frame home or modular home, which is built offsite before delivery, that he had to spend another $145,000 repairing before his family could move in.
|
Quote:
Martinez is just one of dozens of customers in Canada and the U.S. who each paid tens of thousands of dollars to an Ontario-based company that promised to build them steel frame modular homes.
Now, it seems less and less likely they will ever receive the homes they were promised after Green Terra Homes filed for bankruptcy in January.

Is that a scam? The company went broke. Sounds like more of a case of buyer beware, not like the company took their money and moved to Airdrie.

Yeah, the word "scam" is used fair too often these days. It sounds like it was just a terrible company - they tried to deliver on their promises but came up well short.

He could have gotten a much bigger trailer for that price... 160 sq foot? I think my bathroom is almost that big, and I have a small bathroom.

Your bathroom is around 16' x 10', and you think that's small, Your Majesty? That's bigger than most bedrooms.

160 sq feet is not in any way a small bathroom.
But, on your main comment - that’s my thoughts on these tiny homes as well. You can get a nicer outfitted trailer with the same floor area for significantly cheaper.

LOL, ok, mental math gone wrong. It's ~60 sq feet. 160sq ft is a laughable amount of house to pay 35k for though.

Yeah, tiny homes are all well and good until you look at RVs. Mine is 144 square feet and I bought it two years old for $12k. And it also has resale value compared to one of these tiny homes.
Also, that was a super weird OP/thread title.

Went off of the newspapers headline.
Also the communications between the company and customers did come across as scammy

Used repurposed RV parts, sub quality steel.
Quote:
Standen, from Live Tiny Canada, said Green Terra Homes was able to get by without a Tarion registration because it claimed to be certified under the CSA Group, a product standardization company that certifies RVs and modular homes.
However, a former employee who wished to remain anonymous confirmed to CTV News that Green Terra Homes’ CSA certification was always fake.

I read this article awhile back and basically some of these tiny home communities are glorified trailer parks. There's nothing wrong wit hthat, except a double wide is like 50k and these tiny homes are suuuper expensive. In most cases you could get a decent home for the same price.
