I think he also COULD be good enough to play a regular shift in the top 6. He would be the guy that makes room for guys like Baertschi and Gaudreau, but still has soft enough hands and hockey sense to not stifle offence.
I can see why Hartley threw Jackman up on a scoring line a couple of times this season before the trade. Big teams that are excellent defensively make it too easy to keep small lines to the periphery. Sometimes you just need a big guy to crash the net and cause a bit of mayhem, and allow the skilled guys a bit more room to penetrate. Jackman just didn't have the hands (or hockey sense I think) to make it work, but it sort of made sense to try him as such against the bigger teams. Ferland can really help the Flames out in that capacity - or like you said, be a great 3rd liner who chips in offensively.

Optimistic thought? He maxes out as a Darcy Tucker type. I'd be hella okay with that.

He may be slow, but if he continues to progress, perhaps he could fill a role similar to Mike Knuble? Big body who can take a beating and pot a few when needed. Knuble wasn't a nasty player, but Ferland could fit that mold. I would be happy with that.

I don't remember how Gary Roberts' skating was but Roberts started out as more of a banger than a scorer. They are both 6'2" and 215 lbs. Roberts had 16 fights in his first full NHL season. If Ferland comes anywhere close to Roberts, we'll have a keeper.

Does Sergei Makarov have a son that we can team up with Ferland?

Injuries really jacked up the seasons of Sieloff, Wotherspoon and Ferland this year ... sucks, and sort of deja vu.

That's terrible. I had hopes that Ferland might earn a spot on the Flames roster out of camp next season, but that doesn't look likely to happen now.

This was my first thought too. I'm worried that his knee might never be the same. It would be such a loss for the Flames and the Ferland family if he could never skate properly again.

Whoa...never skate properly again?
Now I have no idea what the injury is but to me it sounds like acl tear. Surgery for this has advanced so much in the past 10-15 years that chances are with rehab and strength his surgical knee will be stronger than his other knee.
It sucks this has happened and it's a setback for him but this is no different than Bouma last year blowing his knee and being out for the season. Unless there is something more to it we don't know, all else being equal he'll recover and be fine like Bouma but will suffer the set back of a year of development.

Way too premature for that. It depends what kind of tear it was. If it was an ACL, he'll make a complete recovery. When I blew out my knee (MPFL, MCL, meniscus) the surgeon told me eight months and I could be playing soccer again and that's not much rehab. Ferland will be getting top notch rehab, etc so I can't see why he won't come back 110%.

Good to know. I'm glad that someone knows enough to be calm. Ferland is my favourite prospect and my total lack of medical knowledge makes me think that every knee surgery is the same.

Yeah, with the advancement in medical technology now knee injuries aren't the career enders they used to be.
My cousin had surgery for a blown out knee and the surgeon told him that the repaired knee is stronger and more stable then the healthy one. It's just getting the strength and coordination back, and the mental block of the injury, that takes time. Once he's cleared and he takes that first hit and realizes everything is fine he'll continue on. No point in worrying.

Or with an actual certified trainer and physiotherapist.

I thought Roberts was a certified trainer. Or is just his camp that he has, and designed a program with certified trainers with workouts that are designed for hockey players
