so this is what i started with....

i built a lower cabinet with 3 huge drawers (22" sliders!), made a foot board and then changed up the crib head board a bunch... drilled some big holes, made up some LED lights and voila (yea... if only it was THAT simple!! ha! ha!)

the reused head board ***note the button on the left side just peaking out above the tan coloured pillow....

the lights are 4" sewer end caps that i drilled a hole in and then wrapped some leftover white LEDs in. then used some white coroplast (it's like corrugated cardboard but made out of plastic), then a couple translucent flames logos, then a piece of clear plexi). my little guy absolutely LOVES it!!

next on the list will be making the top bunk - which should be pretty easy. i've got some crazy ideas for that and i'll share pics once it's installed.

then he wants a bridge going over his book case with a ladder at the end. i also need a ladder at the foot of his bed.

he's been "helping" me a ton - which is fantastic... but it definitely adds to the build time! ha! but it's totally worth it. i have so many memories of building stuff with my dad (both as a kid and an adult) - and that's the stuff you cherish forever - especially after your dad is gone. it's just too bad he wasn't still here to see this becuz dad would have loved it and been right their with us building it too!
Bravo!

It can emerge from the basement.

Meet the White Star sisters: Olympic, Titanic and Britannic. Fate prevented them from sailing together...until now.

They're all made from the same 1:1200 scale Titanic kit, with some slight modifications and new paint jobs for Britannic (hospital ship) and Olympic (crazy camouflaged ship). I had to mask the lines for Britannic, but found that the dazzle on Olympic was actually easier to paint freehand (plus I did it with a massive hangover! Not too shabby.) They're on an ocean of resin. I learned my lesson from the last attempt and warmed the stuff before pouring it so there's no bubbles. The original plan was to have a large White Star Line logo under the ships, but it ended up being hidden by too much dye (I included that in the photos). I think it would've been too obscured by the ships anyway, so not a huge disappointment. I'll add a White Star plate to the base before I show it next month, but it's otherwise done!

Gotta give a shout-out to Surferguy who kindly donated a big sheet of plexiglass to the cause, even though the effect ultimately didn't work (you can have it back if you want. You can still keep the beers, though).

Model show coming up June 3 at the Centennial Legion on Horton Road SW. I plan to show this one off there plus a few others. Come on out for some free entertaniment.

Spoiler!

Oh man! Of all the details in those photos the rippling water coming off the bow of the ship is the best.

I’m very impressed with this display as a whole, it’s my favorite of yours so far.

Yeah the ships are fantastic, but your photography is top notch too.

I'm paying more attention to the photography than I have in the past, which might send me down yet another creative rabbit hole...

Just bumping to hype the model show this Saturday at the Centennial Legion - 9202 Horton Road SW. Show's running from 10-5 and there'll be plenty of cool stuff to gawk at. There's no admission fee, so come out for some free entertainment.

The RMMC 2023 Show is in the books, and I'm calling it a good day. USS Constitution took gold in the Full Hull category (even though it really isn't a "full hull" by definition...). Not only that, but I had my Olympic moment in the Waterline/Diorama category - owning the podium! "Bad Day's Fishing" took gold, HMS Hood took silver, and White Star Sisters brought home bronze.

Spoiler!

Here's a selection of the other models on display yesterday - LOTS of really talented people around these parts!

Spoiler!

Good to see BlackArcher101 drop in to see the show. You've got NO excuse to not build now!

This isn't my work.

My youngest came running up the stairs with this about twenty minutes ago, and I'm floored. She started on it right after getting home from school today, and it's on a 12 x 16 inch canvas.

Yep. A ten year old kid who's never taken an art lesson, and hasn't gone a day without creating since she picked up a pencil at three. It's actually kind of scary to see what she can do so young.

Ten is not too young to start art lessons, search for programs for gifted children in your area.

If you happen to be at the Stampede this weekend be sure to check out the Arts and Crafts competition in the Western Oasis. I submitted a carving I did a little while back. It managed to capture me a blue ribbon! Neat!

Davy Jones Locker ain't got NOTHING on my basement!

After finishing Bismarck I wanted to do another shipwreck, so this one went to the top of the stash.

The hull was pre-carved, I just had to plank it, build up the bulwarks and put the hole in the keel.. The ratlines were done one knot at a time (it's either Zen-inducing or madness-inducing. Take your pick), and the sails were shredded with a file. And if you look closely you'll see a friendly sea creature has made himself at home on the wreckage.

At first you'd think that breaking it down after spending so much time building it up would hurt. But half the fun in this build was the destruction.

Enjoy.

Happy Sunday morning. Let's take a trip to...The Batcave!

Had these kits in my stash for a few years and decided it was time to finally build them - the 1966 Batmobile and its 1989 counterpart. The Batman figure came with the '89 kit. I decided to paint it in the comic style in order to have a few different Bat-eras represented.

The first display plan wasn't feasible so I just slapped together a Batcave with styrofoam, styrene sheet and foil. Basic, but it works.

This morning I'd read that yesterday was "Batman Day", so it's somehow appropriate I spent yesterday in the basement finishing it off. Enjoy.
