He is right on track and paid accordingly for his contributions so far.

No one should be disappointed in Hanafin. In the end the Flames made a great deal for him, but he is a #3 or #4 guy and he likely won't go beyond that. If he's the piece you have to add to get Laine, then you add him. Flames D depth is supposed to be a strength.

Ok to try and change tack; if Laine was traded. What kind of return would he fetch?

The equivalent of 4 1sts or more I imagine.

Hence my offer of hanifin, dube, 1st and frolik.

He's already a 3/4 guy at the age of only 22. Is Hanafin some rare player that will never hit his prime or am I missing something?

What? He's a young developing D-man projected as top pairing. What has shown you that he's stagnated as a 3/4 guy and won't reach potential? Weird take.

I mean of course there's a chance he doesn't, but to call it likely that he doesn't is just bizarre.

Anything can happen, and projecting development is nowhere near an exact science.

But suggesting that a 22 year old defenseman, with elite skating, size, some physicality to his game, and offensive ability, who was drafted 5th overall, and has 4 seasons in the NHL already, has already reached his ceiling, is just a bad take.

He was a better player in year 4 than Hedman was in his 4th season.

I think 4 firsts is a bit rich as they come with some much cost-controlled value in today's NHL.

Your offer is pretty well thought out, though I don't find it palatable as a Flames fan, lol.

I’m assuming he said equivalent to 4 firsts as that would be the return if he signed an offer sheet. I don’t see why you’d give him up less.

Although, I am 100% against giving away 1sts 3 and 4 years out. That’s insanity.

I would guess that an offer sheet for this player would be more in the 2 firsts, 2nd, 3rd range.

Because of shortened term? I personally don't see it. Not that he is as good as Matthews, but he will definitely be using that contract as the comparable.

Out of the remaining FAs I think he is the least likely to be with his team at the start of the season. He won't want to debase his contract on last season's poor result, but the team certainly will be pointing to it. I still only think there's a 20% chance he leaves winnipeg but stranger things have happened.
