Hence the DMZ pushed north. In the end, they might not have a choice.

If you are going to do some stupid ####, it's a great time to do it. You've got an out of control child running the US and a nation facing a major natural disaster.

Frankly, I'm surprised other nations haven't started even more overt wars or land grabs. Maybe just don't want to be the first one?

These are not logical thinkers we're talking about. Jong-Un is a wingnut. I wouldn't put anything past him.

From all I've read in the past, China sees North Korea as their irritating little brother that they'll back up but would rather not have to keep bailing them out of their scrapes. Essentially, they don't want American influence right on their border, so they'll prop up NK instead.

So can someone who has more knowledge of this situation than I explain why China doesn't cut some kind of deal with US/South Korea and say "Hey, you guys back us up on this. We'll go invade NK, get rid of this regime, but keep the territory for ourselves." Wouldn't everyone (except NK obviously) be happy with that? Or would they not?

Because China doesn't want to deal with 25 million brainwashed poor people who don't speak their language.

Yup. They'd rather slowly attack south and take 90 million Vietnamese, the less irritating and richer brother.

Is this your take on 1950s Korea?

SK and Japan are aligned with US and there isn't any animosity (beyond historical grudge level) between the two, given they're allies now and all.

Chinese and Russia basically want nothing to do with NK beyond stopping the US and SK taking over, via reunification or new ruling class. I'd imagine their ideal result is regime change while maintaining the ruling gov't, while easing into the 20th century (yes 20th). Hence why the first set of santions approved by China and Russia was when NK was getting close enough to insanity where military action was possible (which would result in SK/US potentially taking over) and they wanted to avoid that point.

Nestle or whoever does Dasani or any bottle water or purification systems. Once nukes start flying, clean drinking water will be at a premium.

Hell, look at Texas! $44 in some places for a 24 pack of water!

There is a small chance of any nukes flying, IMO.

Secondly, Nestle or Dasani, Coke, Pepsi or whoever, aren't putting up the prices themselves in the face of a natural disaster. In this case it's the market places doing that deed. Imagine the backlash if Pepsi Co. or any of those large corporations gouged like that?

Gold and inverse etf's. However it's been easier to catch the rebound to normal when things settle down. That's been the norm for years. So waiting and buying inverse gold and bullish etf's is a little more palatable.

I don't think NK is crazy either, they're saber rattling in response to the threatening and saber rattling they see (US tests missiles, flies bombers close by, has war games next door, etc).

One thing that's been happening though is that they may be signalling that they're willing to talk about a diplomatic solution. Recent statements from NK:

“The measures taken by the DPRK (North Korea) to strengthen its nuclear deterrence and develop inter-continental rockets is justifiable and a legitimate option for self-defense in the face of such apparent and real threats,” Ju told the Geneva forum, referring to “constant nuclear threats” by the United States.

“...As long as the U.S. hostile policy and nuclear threat remains unchallenged, the DPRK will never place its self-defensive nuclear deterrence on the negotiating table.”

https://www.reuters.com/article/us-n...-idUSKCN1B82II

Kim also said North Korea "would neither put its nukes and ballistic rockets on the table of negotiations in any case nor flinch even an inch from the road of bolstering the nuclear force chosen by itself unless the U.S. hostile policy and nuclear threat to the DPRK are definitely terminated," the Korean Central News Agency reported.

http://abcnews.go.com/amp/Internatio...table-48444781

These seem different than previous statements. Does it mean NK is trying to say it's willing to sit down and negotiate? Negotiating with something they have rather than something they may eventually have is a stronger place to negotiate from.

Though it's not like they haven't broken deals before, but really is there any other option except to try again?

Or they're firing more missiles just because they know it bugs Trump

Here's an idea, why don't all countries sit down and negotiate getting rid off all nukes and then nobody has a reason to have nukes any more.

A world without nukes seems like a simple solution. Until that happens, North Korea should be allowed to have nukes.

Why stop with nukes? China, Russia and the USA could wipe out any country on earth with conventional bombs/missiles alone. toast them! after we get rid of bombs just imagine how useless the military's of the world would be so lets get rid of them too.

Seriously man, nukes aren't going away ever! to suggest a wacko country like NK should have nukes borders on insanity, what's next? Iran, Saudi's or the Palestine's?

No they couldn't. Maybe a small unarmed country but you really think China or any country could wipe out the U.S or even Canada with conventional bombs?

"Wacko countries" are countries you disagree with? Only thing wacko is your opinion on a lot of subjects. Thank god you're not in any position in the government. Your opinions are downright scary and as extreme as the people you hate across the oceans.

Yes, NK should have nukes if other countries have and Iran as well. Self defence is not just for Western countries you share the same language with.

It was a strategic launch that will rattle Japan and the US to either diplomacy or the brink. Hokkaido doesn't have any US bases or presence up there, but it has over 4 million people. Firing it over Hokkaido proved the US doesn't have Japan fully covered and some areas of it are indeed weak targets. Also they fired it out of Pyongyang airport area, right out of populated areas, which tells the US they would have to carpet bomb the country to get all the ICBM's. Abe sounds nervous, and so he should be. Abe and Trump probably know now that they would have to level NK border to border, and they can't possible do that in one action. Should war break out, Japan,Sk perhaps Guam and Hawaii will get hit, that is now 100% certain.

North Korea does this type of thing every year when the USA and ROK has its miltary exercises and drills. This one was just longer.
Nothing will come of it, it is all bluster.
N Korea has also threatened Britain and Australia for taking part in these excersises.
