First bar I got into when I was 16 was Denny Andrews, I remember it being packed and tons of fights.
Pretty much what Back Alley was too, on and cougarville!

I haven't been there in years, but part of the coming of age experience in Calgary was going to the Crack Alley getting blackout drunk and throwing up...everywhere.

My buddies and I would purposely leave at 12:30 to go out to the parking lot and wait for the fights to start.

Exactly. You could pick out the guys who just turned 18 because they would scrap at the first opportunity.

I'm not sure how the first part of this sentence can logically be concluded with what you wrote

A lot of nightclubs are around for 3 to 5 years. The Back Alley did it for 23. I think it's fair to say they were doing something right.
Rock n' Roll + cheap drinks = success...I guess. Seemed to work for them.

Yeah, they survived a long time for having a ten guy to every one girl ratio most nights.

I blame this club for hearing loss. Yes it did play good rock music. But the speakers facing in on the dance floor from feet away playing at the volume they had it at is just stupid. Every night I've been there I've come away with ringing ears.

The Crack Alley ...
Quote:
A slang term for the back alley, night club in Calgary, Alberta.
The Crack Alley is the self proclaimed "best rock bar in Canada". It is known throughout Calgary for it's "titty shots", rock music, lack of dress code and lack of security pat down to find the knife/bear mace you probably have on you if you frequent the crack alley.
Staff: It is well known by Calgarians that the crack alley has the most fakest, tannest, bleach-blond, silicone breasted bartenders in all of calgary.
Music: You can request a song to be played at the crack alley if you are a "18 year old" highschool girl who is willing to suck off one of the washed up, 40 year old, DJs in the DJ booth. Although the crack alley does play more rock music than any other night club in Calgary, because of this request policy at least half of the music played on an average night is Lady Gaga, Rihanna or something similar.
Entertainment: Among the many things to do at the crack alley the most popular are; getting "titty shots", fighting (on the dancefloor or in the parking lot) and nearly choking to death from the bear mace that is periodically sprayed by random #######s over the dancefloor.
Clientele: crack alley customers consist of oil rig workers who make a lot of money but blow it all on coke, "18 year old" highschool girls, basically every metal head/skid who went to your highschool and normal people who haven't been in a while and need to remind themselves why they don't go there.

Worked there for a bit. Got fired for being too nice in the early 2000's smelly joint but some good clevage to be seen. Saw one of the 500 buckcherry shows there about a decade after.

No it's the liquor laws changing that killed them. The move to Top 40 probably kept them alive a bit longer by making it more mainstream.
