Lowe's to close 34 Canadian stores
In Calgary this will be the Shawnessy location as well as the location on Bannister Road (formerly Rona and formerly Totem before that). I don't know what it is about that Shawnessy location, but it doesn't seem to work for some reason!

Curious to see what ends up at the Shawnessy location. It was Zellers (I think?) then Target and now Lowes

Splitting up that space into smaller units might be a good idea.

As a living forever deep south resident I will miss the old Totem\Rona store. That Lowes has never been busy anytime I have been in there so it does make sense. The HD down in that area does quite well and it should help them even more now.

one thing I noticed with Lowe's was the decline in customer service.
When they first opened, it was excellent. now they are as bad or worse than home depot. if you can actually find someone willing to help, they know nothing. not even which isle you should check.
There is a small chain up here called Nelson Lumber. that's my go to.

It looks like the bulk of the closures are in Quebec and Ontario: https://business.financialpost.com/n...ores-in-canada
Western Canada is relatively unaffected. It's surprising to me that both the Rona and Lowe's at Sunridge are surviving.

Interesting that they are shutting down shawnessy. Has the store been open for more than year? They also spent time and money reno’ing the place.

Shut down Lowes. Open up Reno Depot. General population thinks its a different chain. Profit.

I live quite close to a Lowes. I keep going over there, hoping to like it. I never do.
Not even sure why.

This x 1,000,000!
You can NEVER find anyone to help you in a damn Lowes store. After an hour long episode to get someone to grab some light bulbs that were up in the racks I swore to never return. They'll have 3 or 4 people working the entire store all night long and nobody knowledgeable about anything.

They tried that in a NW Calgary location and it lasted about 10 minutes. I don’t feel it’s the name on the building that’s the problem but rather the fact there isn’t a market to support that type of building within certain areas.

I think it's visibility. Nobody can see it driving by like Home Depot or Canadian Tire. You have to know it's there. Second reason - marketing. They don't advertise much. People must hear about "super good deals"in order to make a trip and buy some crap they don't need...

Lowes is my go to place to appliances for the simple reason you can pick a time window for delivery.
HD is a random time slot sometime during the day the promise you.
That and having Lowes is great for the addtional brands they carry over HD. I love both stores, and hope both can survive.
As for the Sunridge location - agreed it's odd that two in close proximity were open. The Lowes is larger and frankly better - but the old Revy has the superior location being next to Costco and the "busy zone" of sunridge.

That's going to be a tough call someday, but I'd guess they'd go with the numbers each store is putting out. The Rona location is much better than the Lowe's as you mentioned, but I do feel over the last few years that area around the Lowe's is getting more traffic and people are getting familiar with what is on offer in that area.

i live close to the mackenzie towne stores, and although lowes is closer and easier to get in/out of, i generally go to home depot becasue i have a HD credit card and i feel i know the layout of the store better and can find what i need without help.
sometimes, lowes has different products though, so it is noce to have the choice.
i'd imagine if lowes had opened first, i'd be going there by default
