Pretty simple - players are willing to re-sign at reasonable rates with Championship calibre teams.

Looks like Paul just wanted a home. Must have really loved Tampa. Great middle 6 C/LW option. He was noticeable throughout the playoffs.

7 years. That’s good term for a bottom 6.

Tampa is a good location to settle down in and out of hockey

He obviously fit in well there, but this is a 27 year old bottom 6 forward with a career high of 32 points. Before this season his high was 20 points. AAV is good, but 7 years is a long contract for that kind of player. No state tax helps too.

Does this leave them any room for Palat or is he pretty much gone now?

Again, it’s the total contract value. That’s a big contract in total dollars for a guy like Paul.

There was a story the other day that they’re working to trade McDonagh, who has a 6.75 mill cap hit, so maybe not.

$10 bucks before 7 years are up he’s an overpaid 4th liner on the Flames, that plays good but not $3.15 good, is liked and disliked and is always included in trades and comments to open up that roster spot for rookies.

He is going to be 34 when the deal is up. Cap is going to likely be much higher as well. Solid deal for Tampa in locking up a middle six player. Gives me Nashville vibes

Yeah this one seems...odd

If the Flames were to go out and offer a longer term deal to a depth player that made people go "What? he got THAT term?" like this Paul deal, I'd be on board with a 5 year deal in the $2-$2.5M range with Jarnkrok, I'd be happy about that. He hit a cold snap here, but is an awesome 3rd line player.

I think most of his career goals came from playing Calgary in 20-21. Seemed like he scored against us every time we played the sens.

This is a roll of the dice that could pay off enormously well and I don't think has THAT much of a downside. Might end up paying a 2 million dollar player a million bucks too much for a long time, basically.

This is a terrible contract IMO.

Paul had a great playoffs, and is likely worth $3M for the next year or too - may even be a bargain at that price. But 7 years is a long time for a player like him. He will probably be a $3M replacement player for a lot of years.

Good for him though.

Dude on twitter tried to convince me this was a great contract. Insisting he’s a top 6 player despite being the 3C behind Point and Stamkos and despite being 7th in ATOI (total and ES). He is a classic example of the strong PO performance getting a big contract. His career stats say he will play 2/3 of a season every year and get 20 points. He’s already 27. He is what he is and will likely suffer injuries from time to time every year. And if he doesn’t I suspect it’s because his physicality drops.
