2014-15 Flames' CHL Prospects, General Discussion Thread
Additions: 2014 draft selections Mason McDonald, Hunter Smith and Austin Carroll are new to the group, with top prospect Sam Bennett also tipped to return to the OHL for another season
Losses: Emile Poirier, Ryan Culkin and Brett Kulak have graduated from the CHL and are set to start their pro careers in Adirondack, while the Flames have cut ties with Coda Gordon
WESTERN HOCKEY LEAGUE
- F Austin Carroll (Victoria Royals)
The Flames' final selection in 2014 returns to the Royals for his overager season in the Western Hockey League. The big winger will look to further improve his offensive numbers while pestering opponents with his tenacity and physical play.
- D Keegan Kanzig (Victoria Royals)
In contrast to several other prospects, Keegan Kanzig will not have to worry about earning an ELC any more. Having already signed his contract months ago, the huge defenseman can focus on working on the areas in his game that still need improvements. Oh, and of cpurse he'll drop his gloves again this season - if someone dares to challenge him ...
- F Morgan Klimchuk (Regina Pats)
Out of the three Flames 1st round picks in 2013, Klimchuk will be the only one to return to junior hockey for another season. He definitely needs it, in order to get a bit stronger and refine his game even further. Having lost three of their top five scorers from last season, the Pats will be more than relieved to get him back for another season.
- D Eric Roy (Brandon Wheat Kings)
Eric Roy returns to Brandon for his fifth and final year in the Western Hockey League. It's a vital year for Roy, as the Flames have to sign him after this season or lose his rights, so it's time for Roy to convince the Flames that he deserves an ELC. Without him, the Wheat Kings had an explosive start to season, scoring a total of 16 goals in their first 3 games, so Roy should have plenty of opportunity to score points this season.
ONTARIO HOCKEY LEAGUE
- RW Hunter Smith (Oshawa Generals)
The big winger will try to build on his breakout season and the Generals will heavily rely on him to provide both scoring and toughness. The return of Michael dal Colle to Oshawa would definitely help him in terms of offense, but in any case, Smith is set to play heavy minutes this season.
I will also add Bennett if he is sent back, but for now, Smith is the only Flames prospect in the OHL.
QUEBEC MAJOR JUNIOR HOCKEY LEAGUE
- G Mason McDonald (Charlottetown Islanders)
After the graduation of Ryan Culkin and Emile Poirier, the Flames' 2nd round selection from this year's draft is now the only Flames prospect in the QMJHL (and also their only goaltending prospect in the CHL). After playing a total of 29 games last season, McDonald is set to face a much bigger workload this season, so it will be interesting to watch his development.

Keenan Kanzig was assigned to Victoria today by the Flames. He does not get an extended camp stay like he did last year.

Klimchuk appears to be still injured and did not play last night. The Wheat Kings did not play last night, however it appears Roy is still injured.

I'm glad that both Smith and Carroll are over a PPG. Usually, if you want to be considered a prospect with any NHL potential, you need to be over that amount as an overager.

Carroll turned 20 in March and is in his 4th WHL season, so I'd be indeed disappointed if he wasn't at a PPG pace. With Smith, we have to keep in mind that he only turned 19 last month. But great to see that he's off to a good start, he'll surely benefit from the return of Dal Colle

Hunter Smith isn't an overaged player.

He went through the draft in 2013 before getting picked in 2014, so he's overage for a 2014 pick. Poor choice of term though as he's not over 20.

it really depends on your definition of an overager. To me, an overager is a player who is 20 when he goes into the season and/or has 4 CHL seasons completed (so he could actually play in the AHL already). That is true for Carroll, but not even close for Smith. If he had been born 5 days later, he wouldn't have been 2013 eligible.

it's what I'd expect from a 20 year old in his 4th junior season. Not to take anything away from him, but if he wasn't scoring at a PPG pace, I'd be worried. I hope he can keep it up

I would expect it too, if he were a 4th round pick or above, or had been drafted in his first eligible season in the later rounds. The fact that he's doing so well and was a 7th round pick in his 2nd go round at the draft tells me the Flames might have found a bit of a diamond in the rough. He was pretty impressive at rookie camp and the prospect tournament. He might be another Jooris…guy who came out of nowhere to have a legitimate shot at the NHL. I think it's pretty impressive for how and where he was drafted.

I expected Carrol to be above a PPG this season with age. However, last season was a pretty good one too - 34 goals and 23 assists. More than doubled his goal output from the season before. I expect him to have a very good season due to both his age and his trajectory.
I really like this kid - a leader, has some size, goes to the dirty areas, is very gritty, does have some offensive potential, and seems to have great hockey sense. Hope he has a terrific season offensively, and carries some confidence into pro hockey next year.

Victoria Royals had a hell of a game against the Red Deer Rebels. They were down 4-0 after the 1st period and managed to win 6-5 in OT.
Austin Carroll with 1g 2a +1
8gp 7g 6a 13pts -1 24pim
Kanzig 0pts -1
Carroll has a bit of a streak going... he has scored a goal in 7 straight games and has had a point in every game he has played so far
edit: Carroll is also tied for 7th in WHL scoring atm with former Flames prospect Coda Gordon (played 3 more games than Caroll) and Caps prospect Madison Bowey (played 1 less game than Carroll)

Klimchuk inching toward return:
http://www.leaderpost.com/sports/hoc...397/story.html
Quote:
If Morgan Klimchuk listened to his heart, he'd probably be back in the Regina Pats' lineup this weekend.
Since he's listening to his head, Klimchuk's status remains in doubt because of a wrist injury suffered in NHL pre-season action with the Calgary Flames.
"I've been skating with pucks for a couple days now and things are feeling better," explained Klimchuk, whose team leaves today for Cranbrook, B.C. - site of Friday's game against the Kootenay Ice.
"I wouldn't say I'm quite there but I'm definitely on the right track. I think (playing Friday) is a possibility but I still have to get into a practice with the team and ultimately it's the coaches' decision after that. If I'm not 100 per cent by (today) I don't think I'll be in the lineup."
Klimchuk was expected to miss a minimum of three weeks - but likely more - after jamming his left wrist against the boards on Sept. 24.
The three-week mark arrives today.
"It's probably a grey area," said head coach John Paddock. "(Playing Friday) is what was being aimed for 10 days ago or a week ago. I think it's questionable now. Last Friday or Thursday I would have thought there's no way but he told me (Monday) he's feeling the best he has felt. He has made strides. Anything is possible. I don't know."

Carroll is flying high after his first NHL camp.
I really hope he beats the odds and suits up for the Flames some day.
