In order for an Eberle trade to work out, Frolik would have to go the other way. Not sure if that is what the Isles are looking for.
Eberle has struggled a bit this year, but you'd think he'd be re-energized coming to Calgary with the team it is. On paper, he would look really good on Tkachuk and Backlund's RW. He could really rip it up with those two. They are the perfect line mates for him.
Hard to understand his struggles this year as the new NHL is made for players like him.

Why would we spend 10M on a position we are set at. I would rather the Flames spend less and address the 2nd line C position with a guy like Duchene.

Hall drives the offense of a team, much like Johnny does on Calgary.
He would be a welcome addition on any team.

He did but I have it on very good authority he was a huge Oilers fan growing up. The context of him wearing that jersey was Cabbie asked him to bring something he wouldn’t normally wear.

Dreger says he has a feeling that New Jersey are real close to moving out some pieces.
https://www.nicholsonhockey.com/arch...on-trade-front
Quote:
Toward the end of the segment, the Insider was asked if the fact that there are so many teams clearly in a position to sell might speed up the trade process ahead of the February 25 deadline compared with past seasons.
“It’s possible,” allowed Dreger. “But you’re right. If I look at the Eastern Conference, I mean there are teams that we haven’t heard from yet. Toronto plays the New Jersey Devils tonight. I’m getting the sense the New Jersey Devils are real close to moving out some pieces.
“Now, we’re not talking about the big boys like Hall or Palmieri or anything like that. New Jersey is a team that - Ray Shero is a veteran, experienced general manager. Maybe he wants to dip into the market, or take advantage of someone else who wants to dip into the market early.
“Because the ask on good players - specifically defensemen - is always the same this time of year. If you’re talking about a Top-4 defenseman, you’re talking about a first-round draft pick, you’re talking about a good prospect, and then you’re talking about an NHL roster player.
“That doesn’t seem to change until somebody dives into the market until someone either overpays or underpays, and then I think people have to kind of embrace reality after that.”

Literally nothing could be better than the Flames hoisting the cup this year.
That's what I thought, until I imagined Taylor Hall hoisting the cup in a flames Jersey.
I know that article says otherwise, but If I could have my cake and eat it too..boy oh boy, Edmonton would implode.

Line 1
Hall-jankowski-tkachuk
Bennett-backlund-frolik
Wouldn't really want hall to have the dzone matchups but he would look good with tkachuk.

It's funny how this quote or similar is peddled out every year as if it's something novel. We all know that it's a case of waiting for the first domino to fall, and then all the other teams go 'yeah that's fair, similar along the lines of what we were thinking', or 'jesus, Glencross went for 2 second-round picks?! Na, we'll swerve that'.
Firstly, isn't that how markets work? It's nothing to be surprised about every year, it's how a market functions.
Secondly, it really doesn't matter about the 'first domino falling' effect; is there ever strong examples of good players going for cheap at or before the deadline because the deal before set a price? Teams usually get what they want for their players, other deals rarely dictate that.

MoJo could be a good fit from New Jersey.
There are a whole lot of players from that NYC/Newark/Long Island trio who could be available and really appealing to the Flames, actually:
NYI: Eberle, Nelson, Filppula, Lehner
NJ: Boyle, Johansson, Stafford, Kinkaid
NYR: Kreider, Namestnikov, Hayes, Zuccarello, Vesey
In any event, I think a New York team/Calgary trade could be likely in the coming weeks.

Aside from a depth dman for a collection of b-grade prospects, I can't see the Flames dealing for much. They're in a position where getting a goaltender is asking for too much and nobody would take on Smith without some incentive, and that incentive wouldn't be worth it. He's an evil that has to be lived with, and hopefully by playoffs he can turn it around. I'm sure if there was a do-over that you could see they wouldn't have done that, but what's done is done and he's virtually unmovable. There doesn't appear to be a lot of reasonable deals to be made from teams this year. There are teams with a glut of solid prospects who are at the top and they don't appear to be wanting to give up any of it just to beef up for the playoffs. I'm sure it'll be a lot of depth moves this deadline with next to no major movement as even the bottom feeders seem to want grade A prospects back.

If Hall is available without moving a piece of the core and you're the Flames you do it immediately and don't look back.

Questionable about the goalies. Lehner is earning himself a permanent spot on a team that has been desperate for solid goaltending for years, can’t see them parting. And Kinkaid seems to suck. I make a point to avoid Jersey games though, is there more to his bad stats?
A backup goalie is definitely desirable though.

Kinkaid isn't terrible -- he's definitely better than Schneider. He was a huge reason why the Devils made the playoffs last year. This year, he's struggled behind a poor team, but I'd be willing to take a chance on him behind a strong defensive corps here. He'd also be cheap.
