it would be one thing if you were being wordy for the sake of being wordy and lording your suposed intellectual superiority over someone...but this is literally just using a concise word that has an applicable meaning in the given context

intentionally dumbing down the conversation and using a bunch of words to describe a thing instead of just saying the thing just seems pointless to me, but im apparently in the minority here

I do think eliminating thanks would improve discussion quality.
No way, they are like mini polls of opinion. I’m mostly in favour of them in Fire On Ice, especially if I missed a game. “Backlund played great today” could mean anything, but when it’s thanked by 10 posters I give it a bit of merit. It’s a nice way to get up to speed on the stuff you can’t easily look up (like points).

Saying something properly isn't pretentious. Now, it doesn't translate fully, so I'll maintain the original : allá ti ēi moi taúta perí drun ē perí pétrēn.

If you wish to discuss in a forum of this calibre, learn your ancient Greek, you wastrels.

I wish thanks could be disabled on a thread by thread basis. PGT, news threads, funny pics thread, all great. On the other hand the GMG thread has lost all value. It used to be a wonderful place to vent and debate driving. Now it’s full of terrible take down posts and bizarre strawmen responses in an attempt to elicit thanks.

On the whole though I like Thanks. It may encourage low quality posts from time to time but that’s on the community for thanking crap. Plus I think people learn fast when they try and get thanks only to fail. I’m so used to thanks now I wouldn’t know how to quick long read threads when I don’t have time to read post by post.

Hah, maybe, although I've mellowed out in my old age and am more of a run-of-the-mill poster versus somebody who mixes things up. It's not like I talk about dogs or anything like that anymore - what's left to say? I think people have come around to my views on teachers so anything I say there is hardly controversial. Guess I was a little ahead of the curve on that one.

It is the subtlety of your work that I really like.

For an ex-military man, you are too well-spoken, which means you could be a spy... Are you a spy?

I wouldn’t say it’s pointless, in fact, if you want to be universally understood it’s essential. There’s a reason why newspapers are written at a 9th grade level (or around that). And it’s a reason why a lot of things meant to be understood by a wide variety of people are written in plain language. You want people to understand you.

If there were an academic circle, sure. And I’m not really opposed to big vocabularies or the rules of logic and debate, but writing for your audience is important and some of the most intelligent thinkers and best writers out there are very good at it.

But using ten dollar words or trying to apply rules of logic which most of your audience doesn’t care about (on a hockey message board, for example) is at best lazy. At worst, pretentious. It’s just self serving. But there’s also nothing wrong with that. You do you! It’s just a losing battle when everybody is playing by different rules.
