Seems a bit weird...don't think he's even on any lists anywhere. Probably could have waited a round or two.

Not loving these last two picks...

It makes sense to draft overage goalies.
A little less risk, a little more development, and more of a track record.

Russian goalies seem to be doing very well these days.

Russia is becoming the new Finland for goalies

But also any Russian goalie is high risk high reward

This is because Russians are awesome.

Welcome to the Flames young man. This is a magical place where goalies go to end their careers.

When Vasilevskiy has finally had enough of Florida, he will search for a team with a climate more akin to the Motherland. These Russians we are adding will court him.

some googling... from HFBoards 2019 rankings (sleepers), so this is a year old:

Daniil Chechelev (G, Russkie Vityazi Chekhov, MHL): Unranked by CS. 6'3 Chechelev has good size, strong athleticism, and good reflexes. He seems very calm in net. He put up modest numbers in the MHL (2.25, .915) while playing for a mid-level team.

Is this the Flames' first Russian goalie pick since Medvedev 20 years ago?

Hrmmm, overager. Don't tend to like that. A Russian overaged goalie... I'm just going to assume we never see or hear of him again.

Yeah kind of feels that's good odds. Odd pick in the 4th, feels like a 6th or 7th round move.

Would have rather taken a long shot F or D, but I suppose you want prospect goalies in the system. And who knows, maybe the goalie voodoo for him kicks in in 2021 or something and this looks like a steal.

Columbus took Vehvilainen in 2018 as an overage goalie, and he's why they're looking to recoup assets from one of Korpisalo/Elvis (as well as the expansion draft)
