They have a reasonable amount of cap room with 22 guys and if it comes to them really needing an extra guy for a while, they'll be able to bank some daily salary flexibility that way and they won't have to worry about long travel times for a call-up.
They can basically have their "23rd man" in town or close by while still getting game reps, which would be particularly important for a guy like Gawdin.

Solid signing.
Several shrewd moves by the Flames over the past two weeks.
Mangiapane Backlund Tkachuk
Gaudreau Monahan Lindholm
Dubé Bennett Leivo
Lucic Ryan Simon
Nordstrom
Giordano Andersson
Hanifin Tanev
Valamaki Nesterov
Kylington
Markstrom
Rittich
Like it. there’s some pretty good depth here.

Really good signing. No risk, and will definitely add value in a depth role on this squad. Another baffling decision by Vancouver to let a useful player walk on an affordable contract.

I’m really excited about this signing, I was hoping to get him back when he was on the sidelines with Toronto. I was upset when he went to the Nucks. This guy has what it takes to be a regular in the middle-6, if he’s fully recovered from his knee surgery. Big, fast, good shot, good 200ft player, great along the boards. The fans in Toronto were upset when he wasn’t getting played, and I think we’ll get to like him very quickly.

That’s true. Banking a quarter million in space should help you when you need it.

Flames top end doesn't improve but the depth has unquestionably been bolstered.
We have a better bottom six than last year and one that's closer to 18/19 when we were that team that could "come in waves".

Why do you care so much about AHL salaries?
You can bury the entirety of a league minimum deal in the AHL and keep it off the salary cap.
If the owners are fine with paying big bucks for AHL players, it doesn't affect the big club at all.

"From the moment, Mike Babcock stepped behind the Maple Leafs bench, Leivo was seemingly thrust into a maddeningly unstable position – one a typical player would have handled with infinitely less grace."
"The closest Leivo would ever get to a legitimate on-ice role prior to this season came in 2016-17, when injuries forced him into logging an average of 12:34 a night, the highest per game minutes total of his career. Funnily enough, this just so happened to coincide with Leivo’s best offensive output to date as well. He quickly racked up 10 points in 13 games when given semi-regular usage, finding great success playing in the top-9 alongside Nazem Kadri.
And yet, even with near point-per-game production, it was back to the press box once Leivo’s injured teammates inevitably became healthy."
Toronto pretty much held this guy hostage, not playing him but not putting him on waivers or trading him.

Looked like he was trending toward a 0.5 PPG RW in Vancouver before injuries hit. Clearly he thrives with more opportunity, I hope we grant him that to see what he can do with it. Hopefully the team gives him more leash than Czarnik.
Him and Valimaki staying healthy this season will be important for both their development and the team's success I think.

I like it. A solid utility player that can play up and down the line. Kind of like Ryan, but at a much better salary. Also like it because it further weakens the Canucks.

So much this. Levio could be a huge sleeper and give some options on the right side in the top six.

Another great depth signing. The bottom 6 is the best it's been in a long time.
When healthy, is Leivo our 2nd best RW? Probably 3rd behind Mangiapane (assuming Eatbread is even playing on the right side), but debatable.
Lindholm
Mangiapane
Leivo
Simon
is looking a WHOLE lot better than where we were a week ago

Quite the year to have a bunch of expensive salaries in the A. Are their salaries tied to HRR and escrowed? It’s not my money but that’s interesting for sure.
