So I was chatting a little bit with some friends over the holidays and was thinking about how the flames can avoid losing a good D prospect to Seattle.
If all our D men are healthy then would moving Kylington to the wing be sufficient to accomplish a couple things.
1. Get him some playing time and stay up with the big club
2. Change his designation so that we can protect him as a forward in the expansion draft and then not have to worry about Valimaki, Hanifin or Andersson.
Obviously a lot can change between now and then but I think this could potentially get us out of what looks to be a bit of a jam.
Unless Kylington can legitimately play the wing, why would you make your team worse by forcing a guy out of position over a hypothetical two years into the future?

While also harming his development as a dman

Most decent d-men have the tools to play wing. There's a reason none usually make that transition. They are more valuable as d-men, and the transition would set back their effectiveness.
Lol. Do you really think we can predict the roster and who exactly we’ll need to protect two years out? Do you really think they’ll reboot a promising players development to cheat the system that far out? Are you expecting no trades or acquisitions happening in the next two years? I’m sure Trevilling is giving a lot more thought to how to tweak this roster to win in the next two years than building some hypothetical roster to ignore a young player being taken.

OP is thinking outside the box and that's not always horrible. Brent Burns has played both as has Fat Buff.
I've often times thought that Dougie would have made a great winger due to his defensive lapses and offensive instinct.
Kylington holds his own defensively, so there's no need to move him anywhere. Plus, getting a guy to learn a whole new position this late in his career is usually a fruitless endeavor.

So, why did neither SJ nor Winnipeg think to protect either of these players as forwards?
I am guessing that this is just not a functional loophole.

Kylington is very nearly identical statistically to Valimaki.
Wanna move Valimaki to the wing? No. No you don't.
Kylington is a stud. We're going to lose a defenseman to Seattle. We just are. The least studly one. I trust Brad to make the right call as to who that is.

Exactly. Minnesota lost Erik Haula AND Alex Tuch because they were afraid Vegas would take Eric Staal. Lawl.
