Medium reward: Gets overplayed in all situations and scores 35 pts.

So, if all is daisy we can expect 35 pts, which is great. Or, he's Stajan.

I like it. The analytics and reported wide interest strongly suggest this is a guy who can help. Between and the other apparent signing the roster has way more flexibility. I don’t view Ryan as a bottom 6 player, I see him as a middle 6

3 years for a 31 year old 3-4th line player makes sense in what planet. Rumored at 3m per. This is a Matt Stajan all over again. WtF
Usually when teams invest in a 3 year deal in a 31 year old they are not a ho hum bottom 6 forward. This is foolish. Bad term bad number on this deal if this info is accurate.

We have 3 NHL centres (plus Lindholm).

Jankowski is a weak no 3, Backlund is a weak no 2. As of now we have no fourth line centre.

Please elaborate how that is not weak.

Say Monahan goes down, or Backlund. Deep?

Recall the cap is 10% more then 2 seasons (and 25% than 5 seasons) ago.

So relatively speaking if your are using a point of relative reference in your head, that 3 year $10m deal today is 3 year $9m just two July 1’s ago. Subtle difference.

We will see. I’d love to see a 3rd player sign tomorrow too. Neal? Why the hell not.

Again he’s not a 4th liner
Educate yourself on the player.
Did you even know about him until this off season?

Can you educate yourself just a tiny bit more before making ridiculous posts?

Ryan put up 38 points last season and has amazing possession stats, scoring chance rates and faceoff %.

His 1.59 eP/60 last season would've ranked 5th on the Flames.

Over 20 teams showed interest.

We just got an excellent top 9 player

*If* it's at 4M, but it seems to me this is a high risk only if that's a done deal. If it's less, closer to 3.5M, is it less of a high risk? Certainly.

I think you've assumed a risk at an AAV that hasn't happened yet and one I think is higher than we should get him for.

Now, if it is at 4M then I tend to agree, it looks more risky.

Yawn. Sell him to me a journeyman AHL who made the NHL full time at the very young age of 28. A smaller center that Peter's has a coach crush on in the same way Gulutzan the wonder jerk had for Brower.
38 pts last year with an outstanding -15
Zero playoff experience.
Did a miss anything on this absolutely "marvelous below average" addition.

You need Derek Ryan’s to win cups, that’s why other very good teams were after him. Glad Treliving got another top 9 player. Depth is key in this league

I can't help but think the only reason you dislike this signing is because it was made by Brad Treliving...

Stay Golden clearly hates any move that "Bradley" Treliving makes so I find his posts much more enjoyable to read.

Wow, been what... you're on a hair trigger these days. Is there no move you don't hate?

one of calgary's biggest issues, beyond the PP, was a lack of any pop from the bottom six... guys like Czarnik and Ryan are being brought on to address that.

i think these are pretty solid moves ... its UFA season, so they are bond to be slightly overpriced, but based on the number of teams that have been pursuing them, it seems like there's a lot of teams that believe that their underlying numbers are worth the risk

If you're bringing out +/-, then at least look at a touch more over the last two years:

29 points
CF%: 50.9
CF% rel: 0.1

38 points
CF%: 57.1
CF% rel: 3.2

vs.

25 points
CF%: 44.4
CF% rel: -7.6

22 points
CF%: 50.1
CF% rel: -4.3

Ryan may have been Peters' "Brouwer", but at least he produced and positively impacted his team, which hey - that's just a coach rewarding a player who has actually earned his opportunities.

Quote:
Darren Haynes
@DarrenWHaynes
FO% in 2017-18, minimum 300 face-offs
(league ranking, percentage)

9. Derek Ryan, 56.5
- - -
90. Sean Monahan, 50.4
94. Mikael Backlund, 50.0
103. Mark Jankowski, 48.8

Ryan as the only righty is noteworthy. For some key d-zone draws last year, Flames reverted to using Brouwer.
