Again true. Not worth the price paid (1st, 2nd and 3rd in consecutive years), even considering the draft spot of the 1st. Not a rental, though.

And TBF, Vegas did turn Tatar into Max P., a pretty good second and Nick Suzuki. With Max P coming around now, it's looking way better.

If there was a Chris Simon in the league, that's exactly who the Flames would be looking to add this deadline.

Closest fit is probably Tom Wilson, but Simon was incredible once upon a time. The season he arrived in Calgary he had 14 goals and 225 PIMs in 65 games for the rangers.

Simon scored 5 huge goals for the Flames in the 04 run. Maybe the most underrated player on that team IMO.

75 pims in 16 games in the playoffs!

IIRC....An inch lower and he would have had one of the biggest goals in Flames history as well (I think it was him who hit the crossbar in game 6 OT, but I might have dream't that, a lot of nightmares after that season).

He worked out great, but still, 2nd rounder suggests a depth acquisition.
41 goals and 76 points in 2012 wasn't exactly far removed. He had some injury troubles resulting in a disappointing 2012-13, then bounced right back once he got to LA, and played for five more seasons, scoring 27 goals in 2014-15.

Likely his low acquisition cost had a lot to do with him being a "rental" (although he did end up re-signing in LA) who had a lot of questionmarks around him and had a cap hit of $7.5M which not a lot of teams could take.

Again, I would call that a risky move that ended up being an absolute slam dunk, rather than a depth acquisition.

(And again, this is argument over semantics )

Yup.

Checks a bunch of boxes.

It has me nervous a bit that BT may go after Zack Smth for the same reasons now...though the cost acquisition should be very low, he has 2 more years at 3+M left.

No, you're bang on.

Gaborik was acquired by a team struggling to score goals. They wanted him to score goals and knew they had personnel on the roster that could help him do that.

He wasn't acquired to be a 3rd line guy for them, he was acquired to be a goal scoring passenger at the top end of their roster.

He had question marks for sure, but if it was going to work out, it was going to work out on line 1 or 2 at ~16-19 minutes a night.

That turned out to be a great trade for the Habs, the second and Nick Suziki actually went to Montreal. Meanwhile Tatar is outscoring Patches who has never really been a great playoff performer. Horrible deal all around for Vegas, they basically treaded a total of 4 top picks, Nick Suzuki and Tatar for Max Pacioretty who has 16 goals, 13 assists and a minus 8.
