Default Busted encoding

I thought this was a me issue as I just setup a new Win 11 machine, but I suspect not. I think MS made a change to character encoding handling, as it is on all browsers in Win 11(not 10).

You can see the  . I also get text like this, instead of an apostrophe: they’re

Spoiler!

If I download a page and change the encoding to UTF-8

<meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=UTF-8">

It works fine again. Photon, is this a change you can try making server side? Sounds like I am not alone.

I was able to fix it on Firefox with this add on:

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-CA/fir...text-encoding/

I set it for domain, UTF-8.

I don't recall that issue when switching to Windows 11.

What do you normally see for the encoding? I see charset=ISO-8859-1

Normally the browsers should detect the page encoding (you used to be able to set it in the browser but looks like Chrome stopped doing that a while ago).

If a page is encoded in ISO-8859-1 but then is tried to be displayed as UTF-8 then the non breaking space character will be displayed as the capital A with the circumflex (Â) and then a space, which looks like what's happening to you.

I don't believe the forum software supports UTF-8. I can edit the template to change it but that might reverse the problem or result in other errors or even login problems depending on how some data is stored in the database.

It does show charset=ISO-8859-1

And I'm guessing here, but perhaps Windows is now converting that to Windows 1252? I think? Setting it to UTF-8 makes it work. I've only heard from one other user with the issue, but it's possible caching is saving users. Can you do a hard refresh or a new browser to see if it happens for you?

I downloaded Firefox and installed it and I don't see the same issue. It shouldn't be converting to Windows 1252, that would look even more messed up I think since that's a small subset of UTF-8 with different encoding.

Is it possible you're using a different font in the browser?

Or conversely if there's an option to have the browser allow the site to specify a font maybe disable that and see.. maybe the site code to download the font isn't working for you? (i.e. does this link work: https://fonts.googleapis.com/css?fam...italic,400,700)

Could try loading the page with the developer console and see if loading the page generates any errors that look like they could be related.

Well the weird part is it is system wide. Chrome, Edge and Firefox all do the same(fresh install for Edge as well). So maybe this is a me issue...and coincidence someone else mentioned a similar thing. Will investigate.

Hrrm, I've noticed it happens on other 3.8.x forums as well.

I can reach that google link, even tried installing the fonts locally. Developer console doesn't show any obvious related errors.

Well ok...this looks more like a me issue. Resetting Windows network settings had it working long enough for me to celebrate, but then they went wrong again as I was trying to type this message. So something had loaded while I was celebrating. I didn't have NordVPN active, but I did try uninstalling it. That looks to have been the culprit. Will leave it for a bit, and try re-installing to see if that is what is breaking it, or was a one off mangled install.
