Well, finished my mini atx build.

Pretty powerful little machine considering it's barely bigger than a PS4

Motherboard: Gigabyte Z370N
CPU: Intel i3 8350k (8th gen)
Graphics: EVGA GeForce 1070 TI
HDD: Samsung 960 EVO M.2 500GB
RAM 16GB DDR4

Pretty happy so far.

Now I just need 1080 TI's to be back in stock so I can build another home rig

Brother and I are doing a build for a friend, thankfully money is almost no object so we were able to snag a TitanXP during this gpu shortage.

Just have to finish the fancy custom sleeving and finalizing the hard line tubing goodness.

A nice delidded 8700k at 5.1ghz temps should be pretty sweet.

Difference between 1060 and 1070?

Worth going to the 1070?

That is if I can even find one.

Is Crucial decent memory? If I get 4 x 4GB do I put two in each bank?

I've seen some used on FB/Kijiji, but it's not much cheaper than buying from Crucial.

Crucial is a respected brand and is the consumer arm of Micron, the large RAM and flash memory manufacturer. I've never had any problems with compatibility with them and have always performed to spec.

As for the installation, putting two per bank and going for dual-channel mode would definitely work. But I believe that the memory controller also supports a "Flex Mode" where you fill one bank with two sticks, and the other banks with one stick. This should give you tri-channel for 12 GB and single channel for 4 GB, which depending on your usage may be faster.

Unless you're only looking for a stop gap, I would highly recommend the 1060 over the 1050 Ti. It's a big jump in raw power. There's another big jump from the 1060 to the 1070, but I would say the cost difference there isn't as worth it as the 1050 Ti to 1060 upgrade is.

They bring TI's out later than the regular line just to kind of fit neatly in between. 1050 TI is better than a 1050, but worse than a 1060. 1070 TI better than a 1070, but not quite as good as a 1080.

For your original question, the 1070 is definitely a noticeable difference over the 1060 but maybe not quite as noticeable as the price difference would justify. But the 1060 is WAY better than the 1050 TI and easily worth the extra $130-ish

Thee nice thing about the 1050ti however.... You can actually find one right now

Okay thanks. I think I'll keep looking for a 1060.

Looking to upgrade my old Wifi router. Any suggestions for what to look for these days? I'd prefer not to spend more than $200.

EDIT: The Asus RT-AC68U seems like a good one. Anyone here have experience with it?

Bam.

https://www.memoryexpress.com/Products/MX48122

AC-enabled dual band for $180 after rebate.

EDIT: lol Yes that's the one to get.

I've had it for a bit over a year and it's solid.

Hey guys,

I need to replace my 9 year old home PC with a new one. It is slowly dying. It will be used for a combination of Lightroom (my wife has well over 90,000 photos in her current Lightroom setup) as well as CAD, and games on Steam (mostly sims). I am at least a decade out of the loop on building a PC, so I'm looking for updated advice. Requirements are reliability, good sized SSD up front (also reliable, as I've dealt with two inconvenient failures over the past 9 years), 16 or 32 Gigs of RAM, and was thinking a set of mirrored drives as a data drive (I do also have online backup, but want the extra protection). Any thoughts, and approximately what should I expect to pay?

If I buy that, is there anything keeping me from taking a 500 GB Samsung SSD and putting it there and installing Windows 10 Pro on it?

Nothing at all; though if you don't already have the SSD you might consider getting a M.2 drive like the 960 Evo for better performance.

Definitely get an M.2 drive. That PC has one slot with an Optane module, so you'll have to swap that out, which is fine because Optane really only helps slow drives. You can probably sell it.

All done, next build will be Blue or Silver liquid I think. The Lian Li case is pretty spiffy.

And that canister on the right looks like it was meant for containing an angry version of the T Virus. That's a reservoir I assume?
