Default chemical smell in new chest of drawers

does anyone know how to get the stinky smell out of a new chest of drawers - tried coffee grounds and baking soda - would almost rather burn the thing and put my clothes in cardboard boxes

Take the drawers out and leave it outside for a while. Let the air flow through it to dissipate the smell.

Obviously, don't do this if it's going to rain.

Buy real wood furniture instead of particle board is one solution.

it is real wood furniture - and the expensive kind too - it stinks like wood, glue, chemicals and who knows what else - maybe i'll throw some dryer sheets in there

Dryer sheets will only add fragrance to the odor and wont do anything to eliminate it. You need something to absorb it. Try baking soda or coffee grounds. Airing it out in direct sun as mentioned already is another good option.

Any wood staining on it that might cause the smell?

There used to be something called NilOdor, not sure if they still make it/sell it. It's drops, IIRC.

I've used this in the past, for other odors, seems to work pretty good. I'm sure you can find it just about anywhere, but we usually pick it up at Walmart or Superstore.

Charcoal. Either briquettes or lump. We had a smoke infested set of drawers and it worked great. Have them in a bowl or on something that doesn't actually contact the wood but as open as possible. Several in each drawer and in a few days, depending on the extent of the smell, it should be fine.
