I refuse to play Settlers of Catan and Cranium without having a drink first. LOL, but they are pretty fun.

Balderdash is hilarious too.

A couple games I've tried lately that I've enjoyed are:

Glory to Rome
Age of Empires III (not based on the video game, btw)
Brass
Bootleggers

Others I've tried but didn't really enjoy are:

Dragon Stones
Iliad
7 Wonders
Smallworld

I like Pandemic, it is a fun co-op game. GMT Games make great games, the most recent one I tried was Washington's War. Love Axis & Allies, hoping to buy the 1940 Global set (Pacific and Europe Editions) at some point.

Not really. There's four of wheats, so they're not that rare, and anything that's "overpowered" tends to become a robber magnet. Typically that's brick at the start of the game and ore at the end.

Sure does, it's a great abstract game in the same category as 'Go'.

Love Settlers. Had some friends introduce me to it last year. Not that bad of a game.

Two favourites have always been Civilization (yes, it was a boardgame before a video game) with the expansion and King Maker.

In a way Settlers is underrated. The board game hipsters are too cool for it now, but it's got tons of replayability, finishes in a consistent amount of time, and has just a good balance of luck and skill so that everyone with a decent strategic brain has got a chance but yet the better players will win more often than not.

I was going to say Pandemic as well. Another co-op game that I was introduced to is Shadows Over Camelot which is also a ton of fun. It's a nice change of pace having people get together and play against the board instead of pissing each other off.

The hipsters have been playing it for 15 years. I has tons of replayability, but not that much. It's still a nice gateway game when I'm playing with newer gamers. Like Ticket to Ride and Carcassonne, not a difficult game, but one that's very easy to pick up and enjoy.

One issue with anything outside of the standard Settlers is that it takes quite a bit of time to set up.

Has anyone played Monopoly Deal? A friend introduced it to me and a group of friends at the beginning of the summer and our group has been absolutely hooked now for the last 3 months. We've played it at least once a week since then and usually 2-3 times.

Cities and Knights is pretty much the same as normal to set up. The gameplay isn't as elegant though.

Scrabble and Oxford Dilemma are my favourites and I am pretty good at both.

I like Monopoly and RISK, but the games take a long time to play. I don't think I've finished a game of RISK in 15 years: someone always has to leave, or someone isn't taking it seriously and it's not fun. Monopoly can get pretty vicious in my family (we use to play it around the holidays, but haven't in a few years.)

Catan was fun, but I forget how to play. I have a set laying around somewhere that was a gift.

So if I like Settlers, what other recommendations are there?

Wow this is an old thread, it dates from when Hurricane Katrina was on its way to the US.

Anyway, here is an old favourite:
