They are popping! Pretty happy to be in the middle of nowhere central AB tonight. What a show.

I went out last night for some astrophotography with the aim of capturing the Whirlpool Galaxy and a few star clusters. I had no intention of viewing the aurora and I wasn't even tracking if they were going to be visible.

The star-gazing sucked, but the aurora was spectacular - and that was before 11pm. I was out in the Kathryn area.

Well, figured I should bump this, considering tonight's should be pretty good according to those astrononometers.

I've lived in aurora hot spots most of my life and finally took some photos just now. They turned out pretty good. Might get up in a few hours and do it again.

Tonight might be ok but Friday is looking amazing. An X class flare is on its way, our first of its strength in a decade.

Last night seemed too bright to see anything. Not sure if the moon was the culprit for this.

Last night the Bz (direction of the earth's magnetic field) was pointing the wrong way so we didn't get much of a show despite the flare. Hoping for the weekend!

The Kr Index just hit 7...

http://www.spaceweather.gc.ca/foreca...uthernprairies

7 = Major Magnetic Storm

Forecast to be a 7 for the next 3-6 hours.

Now if we could just do something about that smoke...

Planetary K-index just hit 8...

This is the first time I've ever received a Level 8 alert from NOAA.gov since signing up in 2010.

Looked really good in the evening but so far doesn't seem like it. Smoke, moon, and Bz again in the wrong direction. If you can find some clear skies...

Bz dropped but too smoky out. Hopefully we still get a show tomorrow and the smoke clears.

I saw nothing. I have seen before from within Calgary, but I was expecting, because of the news reports, that this would be even more visible than before from within the city.

Went east of Airdrie last night. There was green and but it wasn't moving much but it seemed to build over the hour and a half that I watched it. Was just about to pack up the camera around midnight when it went CRAZY. Wow that was something else.

Best lights I've seen aside from my trip to Yellowknife to see them. Can't wait to edit the pictures when I get home from work..

Oddly enough. The magnetif scale for the Soithern Prairies was reading zero last night, but aurora watch was calling for 98% chance. I drove out highway 22 and I hunt was happening so I kept checking the k-scale and still nothin, but it went crazy at like midnight.

What setting do you use? I used a camera phone and it couldn't capture much at all.
