Default Moving to BC

I apologize in advance, I was looking for a thread for this topic but no luck.

I was wondering if anyone has made this move? Pro's and Con's?
I was offered a position in BC (not in Vancouver!) for my line of work. The place where I was offered the job at will be closer to my wife's hometown and less hectic than Calgary but I will be getting a paycut (+/-) 20%. I have a young family to take care of. Any thoughts? Thanks.

It's more expensive, I certainly noticed that. I'll be honest though, your base spending habits will reflect your income, it doesn't make that much difference in the end. It didn't to me anyways.

As for lifestyle, well that all depends on where you live in BC

What's the cost of living like in this new locale? If it's also around 20% less, it sounds like the pace of life and proximity to your wife's hometowns are pros worth moving for.

Ya it really depends. Much like anywhere there's a mix of crazy expensive (Vancouver), Calgary expensive (Okanagan), and small town expensive (most other places). Whereabouts are you headed?

The potential move will be in the Kootenay's (Cranbrook). I guess Im just having hard time wrapping my head around the pay cut. The job will give me more opportunities to grow and learn more about my current profession but I also have to be realistic ensuring that I adequately provide for my family as well.

Because if it's Calgary, the pay cut is moot. Way cheaper to live in Cranbrook I'd imagine

Cranbrook is a wicked town, especially if you like outdoors stuff.

The Welcome to BC Tax:

[For example, if the fair market value of a property is $450,000, the tax paid is $7,000].

Well, housing costs will be significantly lower. I think groceries are about comparable. You are on a major highway, so it's not like there are enormously-added infrastructure costs.

Unless it's new or you're a first time homeowner. I've avoided it twice!

Dylan have you spent any time on this site?

http://www.costofliving.welcomebc.ca/

'Housing in Kimberly would be even cheaper, but could be hard to get out of.
