It is so tough to get away from and purchase things that are not built in China, but more and more I am trying to do just that. It is only a small gesture and I don't think that old UCB will have a negative affect on China, but maybe more and more nations will look to alternatives to move away from this Human Rights nightmare of a country.

Worldwide business greed and capitalism fueled China into what it is now and into the future and in most ways China is in the drivers seat. Like India (and some others), human life really does not mean a whole lot...workers are workers and each country has millions and millions and millions of them. China controls using their form of communism and India (and others) controls via the caste system. Neither country cares what the West does or thinks about anything, Modi deflects and Xi just ignores.

Trudeau looks to me like a young child eager to show his teacher or parent his latest coloring masterpiece, only to have it dismissed and pointed out that he coloured outside of the lines.

I have zero love for the Chinese government, but it's pretty clear Xi doesn't take Trudeau or Canada seriously. It's all well and good to 'stand up to the bad guy', but they are the world's second largest economy and our second largest trading partner.

I'm ready to admit my opinion of Trudeau may be colouring my take here... I think he's a twit and, for example, I wouldn't trust him to park my car

Harper is still somewhat relevant because he does come out to criticize the government once in a while and endorses specific candidates. He is still in the background trying to have an influence. This is typical in the U.S., but usually in Canada, once a PM is done, they slide into the background, except in the rare cases where they continue to serve as an MP or something.

When we need money for things like health care, why are we throwing money away on things like this?

This is why I will not advocate for higher taxes. If the tax dollars were spent properly, and we still needed more funds for the level of services we have come to expect, then I would consider an income tax increase.

Is your argument that the CBC serves no purpose and therefore should not be funded or something else?

Are you comfortable with all news coming from the private sector?

If you are going to attempt to present a logical argument, it helps to start from a position of reality. I look to the CBC for news, so you've already failed in your opening line.

Plenty of CBC stories get posted here. So you are wrong on that, too.

I get the article is compelling to people like yourself. 11 unions sounds scary! The population of Nanaimo you say? $1.2 BILLION DOLLARS?

But a little bit of thought goes a long way. The CBC gets about 0.3% of the budget. It (apparently) equals the income tax of Nanaimo, which is 0.2% of the population. The numbers themselves are not really significant in the grand scheme of things, so it’s easy to call bull#### when you say things like “Well, I’d be all for increasing taxes if only they fixed that 0.3% they’re wasting! Oh well, guess it’s no more taxes!”

Having an honest debate about ways to improve the CBC and ensure the funding is proper is a debate worth having. But you’re not bringing anything interesting to the table, so who cares?
