If Ottawa (or anyone with room and picks really) wanted to get creative, they could offer him a 4 year deal that walks him right into UFA.
8M X 4 years AAV...structured... 6M, 8M, 8M, 10M the QO at the end being the 10M
IIRC compensation would be 1-1st, 1-2nd, 1-3rd
What do you do if you are BT?

Probably hold your nose and sign it.
At 8.4M, Treliving still has to make an ugly salary dump trade before the season starts to be cap compliant.

Gaudreau played in the World Cup. He was already in game shape.

Isn’t he a UFA after 4? QO means nothing if he’s a UFA

If he is UFA the last year means nothing salary wise.

Good call...though i still thinks he would be unlikely to sign for less at that point provided he had lived up to the deal those 4 seasons.
But in saying that...what if it was a 3 year deal?
6M, 8M, 10M.
Then what do you do?

You could even make it 6, 6, 12, I think. Would you trade a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd for 3 years of MT? Maybe a teams thats close would but I don't think any can afford that.
Doubt a team would do it though.

Probably the best case scenario is sending Czarnik and Kylington down and going with a short roster. This leaves 8.147M for Tkachuk, which would bring the roster to 22. After the season starts, you can bring someone up on minimum salary to sit the pine on Valimaki's LTIR and fill out the roster.

So if an offer sheet of 8.45 came puts them right at the ragged edge of only playing a 1st 2nd and 3rd, the Flames would be in tight to match that?

They can't without an ugly last-minute salary dump trade. At this point, I hope the delay is only because they have a handshake long-term deal that can't be filed until the season starts because it requires the use of LTIR to fit under the cap.

Have any offer sheets not been matched in the last 10 years? As a player signing an offer sheet, I think you have to expect you're staying with your home club...at least for a while.
This would be absolute insanity for Ottawa...so it's definitely possible. A lot more sensible for CBJ...kind of hard to imagine them wanting to go back into full rebuild mode yet again.

If memory serves, the last one that wasn’t matched was Penner.

Didn’t really know who Murphy is but HF locked the thread stating he is not a reliable source so this Offer sheet talk is all BS

Columbus would probably have to offer him more than Ottawa. With all the pieces they have lost, Columbus is clearly a team on a downward trend. At least Tkachuk's brother is in Ottawa.

The only 3 teams that have the required cap space and picks for that are Anaheim, Ottawa, and Winnipeg. And Winnipeg obviously has their own issues with Laine and Connor.
So the threat of him choosing to sign an offer sheet from Ottawa might make sense from the possibility of playing with Brady... but he'd be going from a team that finished 2nd overall to a disaster of a team in recent history.

Yes, I'm sure it would take a bit of a premium over the Flames' best offer for him to sign in Ottawa.

Do you really think Colorado intends to offer sheet Tkachuk in the sense that what pressures the Flames potentially somewhat undermines their own position with Rantanen?
|
Well that hardly answers my question. I think it’s unlikely that anyone offer sheets Tkachuk but Colorado is the team that I think he would be ok playing for and they have some semblance of cap room.
Could they clear enough room to sign Rantanen and Tkachuk to nearly identical long term deals?
As for Sakic being “old school” and not behaving like Dubas, that’s not really on point. Dubas hasn’t signed any offer sheets and frankly isn’t relevant to this discussion. I don’t know Sakic well enough to say whether he’d do it. Other than in general, I think offer sheets are a long shot.
