icon57 2018-2019 CHL Prospects General Discussion Thread

Flames are projected to have only 4 prospects in the CHL this year after having 8 last season.

Graduated to pros:
Gawdin, Dube*, Phillips*, Fischer, Valimaki*, Schneider
*indicates the player could still be assigned back to the CHL as an overager this season

QMJHL:
RW/C D'Artagnan Joly 6th round 2017 171st OA : Bale-Comeau Drakkar
https://www.eliteprospects.com/playe...-artagnan-joly
Injured in the offseason last year, Joly had a slow start but still finished 12th in the QMJHL in pts/g. Looking to build off that and be among the offensive leaders in the QMJHL this season.

LW/C Dmitry Zavgorodniy 7th round 2018 198th OA : Rimouski Oceanic
https://www.eliteprospects.com/playe...tri-zavgorodny
The diminutive Russian forward is looking for a WJC spot. Will probably be in the annual Russia-Canada series. He finished 37th in the Q for goals last season. Zavgorodniy will also likely get time on a line with Alexis Lafreniere who is projected to be the top pick in the 2020 draft.

OHL:
C Adam Ruzicka 4th round 2017 109th OA : Sarnia Sting
https://www.eliteprospects.com/playe...6/adam-ruzicka
After a blazing start to last season, the old questions about Ruzicka's consistency and effort levels came back into play after his production leveled off. He still managed to put up relatively decent numbers for the OHL last season but the arguement can be made that he was propped up by OHL player of the year Jordan Kyrou.
With Kyrou and Ang going pro, this season will likely give a big insight into whether Ruzicka has a good chance at making it to the NHL or not as he will be counted on to be the biggest part of the Sting's offence. Ruzicka will also most likely will be heading to his 3rd straight WJC for Slovakia this season.

Brock Otten has a good take:
https://ohlprospects.blogspot.com/se...0&by-date=true

WHL:
C Milos Roman 4th round 2018 122nd OA : Vancouver Giants
https://www.eliteprospects.com/playe...44/milos-roman
When was the last time the Flames had only 1 prospect in the WHL? If ever? Roman is looking to bounce back from an injury riddled season. Some draft experts say the injuries caused his draft stock to drop farther than it should have, so this could be a breakout season for him if he can stay healthy. Like Ruzicka, Roman is looking to represent Slovakia at the WJC for the 3rd straight year.

Also of note the Flames have to sign Joly and Ruzicka before June 1, 2019 or they re-enter the 2019 draft. So both players are likely playing for NHL contracts this season.

Adam Ruzicka will be the most interesting prospect to follow this winter. I think that his trajectory could swing in either direction. Coming in as an over ager, it is expected that he dominates. Anything short of that and his standing within the Flames will drop considerably. I for one am rooting for the kid.

FWIW, Ruzicka's not an overager. He's in his 19 year old year.

First game of the season for a couple prospects

Joly had 1g and was +2 in a 3-1 win. Named 1st star

Sarnia was supposed to play SSM, but the game was postponed because of weather.

Roman was pointless in a 3-1 win.

Zavagorodniy's Oceanic play their first game tomorrow

Joly 1g 2a +2 in a 9-3 win.

Fantastic start to the season for him.
3gp 3g 3a +3

Baie Comeau might be a very strong team this year if this keeps up.

Little Z is an exciting prospect wow.

A combination of small and Russian might have allowed the Flames to smash a grand salami in the 7th round.

Fingers crossed.

Zavgorodniy picked up 2 assists in a 5-4 loss

9gp 7g 10a 17pts +7

Now in sole possession of 1st place in the Q for points. 2 points ahead of 2nd Nathan Legare who has 1 less game played. Their pts/g is near identical though.

Still tied for 2 in the Q for goals
