Made it back from a 650km 10 day bikepacking trip between Canmore and Castlegar along the Great Divide and Trans Canada Trail routes. Will have some pictures my friend took in a couple weeks and I took a bit of video so may try to put something together and post it here.
Long overdue, but here are the photos from the trip on my friend's website:
MEC South is opening up this weekend. It will also have "An open-concept bike shop, unique to this location, will provide full-service maintenance, repairs and fittings."
I doubt I'll take my bike there for repairs but it'll be great having some place close for accessories.

Grand opening event is the 8th but they're ready now so they're opening a week early and still having the event on the 8th.
Quote:
MEC (Mountain Equipment Co-op), Canada's go-to place for outdoor gear, know-how and inspiration, will open its second store in Calgary on Saturday, September 1, 2018, ahead of the grand opening event on September 8th. Located in the growing Seton Urban District, the 24,000-square-foot store will feature a wide product assortment and be a community hub with classes, clinics, meetups and workshops to support MEC members in leading their best lives outdoors. An open-concept bike shop, unique to this location, will provide full-service maintenance, repairs and fittings.
For sure. Get the kinks out of the system before the big event.
They don't want the same problems the theatre had on their opening day. Young staff who didn't know what do if things didn't go as planned. Couldn't process tickets purchased online. Broken drink machines.
Location: Close enough to make a beer run during a TV timeout
Exp:
So this probably doesn't apply to anybody in this thread.........
If you are doing 30 km/h down the path and are approaching a pathway intersection:
- if you are going to turn, signal that you are.
- if you decide you aren't going to signal, don't get mad at me that I yielded to you based upon you continuing straight.
- be aware that your speed was also a significant contributing factor to this.
Don't get me wrong, as slow as I am I do enjoy going fast when I can. I am also mindful of my speed and the extra caution I need to exercise.

What time are we thinking of starting out next Saturday?
I was thinking 9am for the 100km ride. 10am for the shorter. Then we'll end around the same time in the early afternoon.
I'll put together a post later today with the two routes and some more details. I'll put a running list of who's attending as well so we can keep track of that.
Both rides are "no drop" rides. We're just out to have fun and get some kms in before the weather turns. There are virtually no hills on this ride so we'll be able to go at a decent pace but no one will be left behind. We'd like to try to maintain 25km/h, give or take a couple kms for stops.
Starting at Cold Garden (1100 11 St SE, Calgary, AB T2G 4T3). There is lots of parking on the street and a little lot at the brewery. It's far enough off the main strip of Inglewood that I don't believe you have to pay for parking either. Cold Garden does not have food but we can order in. However, I've got a line on some great Italian paninis, so I'll be bring a bunch for everyone post ride. If you have really specific diet needs, you're probably on your own for food.
We'll be leaving sharp at these times. If you can't make the ride but want to come for a beer anyway, we'll be there between 1:30 and 2pm.
All riders should have the usual stuff with them. Spare tube, pump/canister, tire repair stuff, a couple water bottles, a bit of food (energy bars, etc).
Here are the people who said they'd be attending:
KTrain
Worth
hungryhun
ken0042
the_only_turek_fan
Maybes:
habernac
Fuzz (super soft)
Coys1882 (at the end so we can draft off him)
If you're going to join us on the ride, let me know and I'll add you to the list. Let me know which distance you're doing as well.
If you're bringing friends, let me know as well so I can have enough sandwiches for everyone.

Looks like a bunch of fun. I’d love to join in, but I am both busy that day, as well I don’t have a road bike yet. I’ve been mountain biking a ton this year, and have now begun shopping for some sort of a road bike. Not sure if I’ll buy it this fall, or just wait into the spring when the selection is greater.
Hopefully the weather is great for you all, and maybe I’ll be able to join in next year.
Anybody ride a specialized diverge? I’m looking at something similar to that....good on the road, but some flexibility towards a bit of the gravel bike angle.

My wife has a Diverge Expert. She loves it. It's her commuter bike. She will likely enter in the Ghost in the Gravel with it next year.

I'm such a struggler. Went to ride to work this morning but had to put my front tire back on as I had the bike at MEC getting its free tune-up. Go to put the tire on and lock it in place and it's not working. So I push a little harder, then push with my foot, and the whole front lock assembly goes flying off, there's a bolt lying on the ground, there's a spring lying on the ground. It's still all sitting in my garage as I didn't have time to even look at the damage I did as I would have been late for it. Sigh.
