New Zealand beating Norway was a shock, but I seriously question the wisdom of expanding the tournament to thirty-two teams. There are almost no competitive matches in the group stages at all.

Australia was definitely the better team, but Ireland didn't back down. It should be an interesting group.

Ireland played well after giving up the goal. Never understood that philosophy. You are handicapping yourself.

Bit of a scrappy first half with no real chances from either Canada or Nigeria. Grosso and Quinn are doing well to get the ball in space in the midfield but the quality in the final third is lacking. That's pretty typical of this team the last few years though.

Oof, terrible penalty attempt. Soft and not in the corner.

LOL - I know it is winter Down Under, but some people there are wearing parkas! They have no idea what cold is.

Anyone who believes in equal pay for the women’s team should be forced to watch this farce. Neither team can put five passes together without falling over or kicking the ball out of bounds by mistake.

Poor choice by Lacasse with left wing open.

Just terrible all around. Nigeria trying to kill time by playing it around but then the last woman back shorts her pass about 10 yards to give Canada a 4 on 2 counter break, but the the ball doesn't even get into the box with a selfish play.

Really struggled to create anything all game, plus a missed penalty. Tough one.

The Nigerian goalkeeper was the only good part of the match. Christine Sinclair looked very old. The best part of her game has always been competing for long balls, and she just isn’t mobile enough to move around like that anymore.

For Nigeria it's a win, no question. TSN kept talking this past week about how Canada was disrespected by being ranked 10th best to win, but they didn't do anything to throw water on that today.

Pretty brutal first game.
Good news if they beat Ireland and Australia it doesn’t really matter, but not a good sign going forward.

I completely agree. They had nothing going in the final third. Pretty weak display to be honest.
