Giving teams a bye means they miss out on some playoff revenues. It also has them entering round two flat, due to a layoff.
It's a terrible idea.

84, 82, whatever. You can pretty much tell how the season is going go to go by game 20 and just stop watching until the playoffs.

Play-in round could be pretty quick, and eat into the ~3 off days that already happen. You can just copy the NBA version using conferences, or expand it a bit more by doing it in each division:
1&2 seeds in
(G1) 3v4, winner = 3 seed
(G2) 5v6, winner plays loser of above in (G3) to determine 4 seed
12 extra games over 4 days. You can jump right into 2v3 games and basically have no dark days at all.
I'd schedule all intra-division games on the last days of the season - say ATL/CEN finish reg season on Sat, MET/PAC finish on Sun - then ATL/CEN play-in goes Mon/Tue/Thu, MET/PAC goes Tue/Wed/Fri. Playoffs officially start on a Saturday.

I like the play in idea as long as they cut the regular season down to compensate. Less regular season games but the play in games should be higher revenue. Also gives that higher revenue to more teams.

I like the play in idea and going back to 1v8 not the divisional games. You already play them the most another potential 14 games is a bit much.

I think the play-in games are 1 game. The most any team would play is 2 games.

I meant the current divisional playoff format. 1-8 is the best.

Get rid of the trapezoid and let goalies skate wherever they want. Why are we restricting them?

I don't understand why some people want fewer games.
Pre-season definitely goes on too long with exhibition games though. Owners like them though because it's free money for them.

To protect them.
If you let them skate where ever, they need to be fair game.

Because it was stifling offensive chances.
Before the trapezoid was in, goaltenders had become glorified dmen, skating out to corners to retrieve pucks, which had then caused dump ins to essentially become nothing more than a possession change. Then pucks would head back up the ice without the attacking team ever even getting a touch.
Limiting the area the G could play the puck, allows for more board battles/turnovers, which then results in more shots against/scoring chances for...which leads to more offence.

Without a redline and no touch offside, the game flows much more. Once they got rid of those rules, the trapezoid shoulda went with it. Having goalies play the puck whenever they want would lead to far more offence because they would all make mistakes.
And if a goalie decides he’s brave enough to skate out to neutral ice then that’s on him and fair game to get lit up.
The trapezoid is dumb in todays NHL.

So in a nut shell, the trapezoid promotes dump and chase offence…. No thanks to that.

Tell the NHL then.
They are the ones who did the studies on it all.
They say the trapezoid creates more offense.
That's why its there.

I don’t think you’re being disagreed with. The point is more that all offence isn’t equal. A ton of chances of dump retrievals vs rush chances… yawn.
Although I think you could argue that teams having to defend against the possibility of a dump actually enables more rush chances.

Alright let me just pick up my bat phone.
Isn’t the purpose of this site to discuss the NHL?
