It’s up to Sutter to get him going. You can’t fault Huby for cheating on offence because he isn’t. But if Sutter can’t get more out of him then it’s the coaches problem because Huby and his cap hit isn’t going anywhere next year.

Start by putting Backlund on his line and go from there.

I also note he had 3 short handed goals last year (and 5 points in total), maybe give him some PK time to open up the ice for him?

You really hope that he can turn it around next year, otherwise you have to consider trading him and eating some of that salary.

The Flames are more invested in Hubderdeau than they are in anyone else. I think a coaching change might be the only way to salvage him but I don’t see that happening.

The one deal that I think of that could make sense is Huberdeau for Miller. Both teams potentially want a do over on those long term deals. I know Millernis having a much stronger offensive year he has seemingly carried some baggage and rumors of being difficult and not well liked. Vancouver is looking to shake their team up so maybe they would think Huberdeau would bounce back in a different system? Miller seems more like a Sutter player and with all the veterans here I wouldn’t be as concerned with the locker room issues.

He was prolific on a line with Barkov, yes. Apparently not so much when paired with any of Florida's other centres (Trochek, Wennberg, Lundell)

One thing for sure is if you trade him he would score 100 points next season

Well this isn't true

Barkov missed a ton of time last season and they weren't on the same line. Huberdeau led the league in primary assists

Huberdeau was a top prospect, 3rd overall pick, 5 seasons over PPG

This idea he is an average player that had one good season is beyond ridiculous

What to do with Huberdeau?

Invent a Time Machine and go back to the summer when I said not to re-sign Huberdeau and to go full rebuild instead.

He's not really much of anything in particular........

Except for 2 neat bump back passes per game

Panthers caught lightning in a bottle turning that into 115 points

This. But also Confidence and Chemistry

I think the team he was drafted by and that he was a top 5 point producer for over the previous 4 seasons going "We don't think we can win with you, or don't think you're worth an extension" broke him.

Then they trade you for Tkachuk and throw in Weegar and a 1st too.

Confidence rattled.

Then you come here and you just have no chemistry with anybody on the ice and don't really fit into the system the coach is trying to play at all.

I think the Jack Han article does nail it in that his production was probably always a bit overrated/inflated in Florida, but also that his skill set requires more open ice, and Sutter's system is played in the trenches. Just not a fit.

Maybe he needs to play in low-pressure market.

It's funny that many Flames stars have turned out to be this way.

Gaudreau needed a quiet american suburb near (but not too near) mommy

Tkachuk needed vitamin D, golf carts and flip flops

Ride it out. Selling low on a player is rarely advisable and it's not like there's many teams with 10m in cap space. The only other option for moving on is a larger version of the Neal/ Lucic trade.

I think the team should look for some speedy puck carrying line mates and go from there. If he still sucks may as well kickoff a rebuild as we won't be competing with that cap hit unless we get some grade A ELC players.

Since we've gone all in on Huberdeau, the team has no choice but to try to build a team around him.

Maybe that does mean we try to replicate whatever worked in Florida or works for his playstyle including a more run-and-gun offence and players like Duclair and Bennett to play with him.

We complain that plays seem to die on his stick like Lucic but I've also observed that he's often alone out there on the ice with no options to pass to without making a bad giveaway. This team isn't playing like a team.

I believe Sutter and his style of play stifles Huberdeau and the creative side of his game. He also needs some scoring wingers to play with, something we lack outside of Toffoli.

Huberdeau would be second in league scoring if his contract was up this year.

How does that explain his straight up laziness? I haven't seen this crap since James Neal was a Flame. Huberdeau has barely tried all season.

Sutter should just healthy scratch him at this point and tell him to stay home. Don't even come to the rink if you're just going to mail it in. Seriously, I would love to see him scratched for a few games. Maybe that will set him straight.
