The rapid decline in US life expectancy also coincides with covid, so I would think far more than gun violence that drop has to do with covid policies, access to healthcare (inequality), and the prevalence of comorbidities.

Gun deaths in the US are nuts, but I don't think they're what's changing.

Why is life expectancy falling in the US?
COVID-19, drug overdoses, and accidental injury accounted for about two-thirds of the decline in life expectancy, according to the 2022 report. Other reasons included heart and liver disease and suicides.

The drop in life expectancy would have been even greater if not for a bit of good news: decreases in deaths from chronic lung disease, pneumonia, influenza, and Alzheimer’s disease.

It’s notable, for example, that some of the states with the lowest life expectancies are also the ones with the most uninsured residents and, yet, have turned down Medicaid expansion.

Its declining/not rising - exactly where you'd expect to be happening:

Basically if you live in a poor red state - you are living 20 years less than a lot of the country.

Is this simply a heat map of Waffle House locations? The redder it is the more Waffle Houses?

If you've ever eaten in the deep south, you'll know exactly why life expectancy is so low there.

It's not so much geography, as wealth. Poor people in the blue areas are probably having similarly bad outcomes to poor people in the red areas. It's just that there are relatively more poor people in the redder places to drag the average down.

Yeah, covid was big, 1.15m died over the last 3 years, gun deaths are relatively the same the last 6-7 years at about 1.2% of the population yearly, guns are also the leading cause of deaths for kids under 19. that's messed up!

Too lazy to go get the articles but Japan has decided to say “nah” to the US price cap on purchasing Russian crude oil (not good, possible floodgate opener move?) and meanwhile a few other (large) countries are starting to shift in purchasing with the US dollar. Russia and China the notable ones but India putting pressure on others to use the Rupee as well. Not enough of an expert to understand the ramifications of these moves, however.
