One of the few memorable moments from the Sochi tournament was Bouw’s deft little slap pass feed to Jamie Benn against the US. Wasn’t on the level of Pronger-through-Lemieux-to-Kariya, but it was a high-skill, high-IQ play that made you wish Jay would simply impose his will on the game more.

It isn't about the player, it is the contract. The best player in the league would have negative trade value if he had to be paid thirty million a year. That's what we're looking at here - a terrible contract that we'll never be able to move.

The best players in the league will be making 16 soon...good players like Horvat make 8+
10.5 isn't what it used to be, any PPG player will be making that soon. Gaudreau just got nearly 10 for 73 points and -26
And honestly who the hell would have put up big numbers on the Flames last season?

In Florida...so like 11+ Calgary money
Tkachuk could have had 10.5 here too
Duh
Huberdeau tied for 2nd in league scoring...ahead of Drai, ahead of Tkachuk, Matthews, Marner
Like what did you expect him to sign for?

Around 36 players played at a point per game pace or higher this past season.
11 players make 10.5 million or more.
I think it'll be a while before the cap inflates enough for a point per game player to be worth 10.5 mill.
This is especially true when offense is continuing to increase.
Now with that said, Huberdeau is a relatively late bloomer (as far as progression goes), doesn't overly rely on top speed, and hasn't been injured much. There's a chance he could age relatively well.
He's one of the best playmakers in the world. The 10.5 mill he got was probably fair value based on the open free agency market.
He just doesn't have trade value. Most UFA signings don't. Since he's an elite player, I do think he'd have value with cap retention.

Well like I said 10.5 in Calgary is less elsewhere...tons of players make 9+
Also Huberdeau had 115
A guy like Drai makes 8.5 but his 3rd contract will be 13M+

Huby is going to be a 80-90 pt player next year, and because of that his C and RW are going to have career years (assuming they are current roster players).
If Lindholm takes a team friendly deal, I'd like to see Huby - Lindholm - Mangia. I think Lindholm gets close to 2022 numbers and Mangiapane breaks 40 goals.

Hot take, I'm happier to have Huberdeau locked up long term than if we'd given Gaudreau the same contract. Both elite playmakers but Huberdeau has the size and reach that allows him to win battles Gaudreau never could.
Huberdeau has a lot of talent and I expect a big rebound next year. Think the new team adjustments, some strange linemate selection, and misuse on the powerplay cost him at least 30 points.

Not relevant.
The fact that it is similar to less elsewhere it is still $10.5 MM here.
If he got traded back to Florida, does the amount decrease to $9MM?

It's totally relevant when someone is comparing the contracts
That's like someone saying "why did you pay X for your house in Calgary I paid Y in High River you dumbass"
Signing guys in Calgary costs more, its just the reality. The leagues #2 scorer isn't giving Calgary a bargain
I mean Tkachuk wanted to go to Florida and got to pick them a year before UFA, they were obviously getting a bargain, there is no way Calgary gets him for that even if he wanted to stay

How many of those players signed contracts when they were playing below a ppg or as RFAs? How many of those players signed contracts a while ago when only the top stars got $10 million? How many of those players have been consistent ppg players?
Also the cap has been flat for a while, but will likely increase with inflation soon.
Consistent ppg players signing for $10+ million will be the norm very soon.

It’s certainly relevant when you sign the player.
It isn’t relevant when you try to move him. It is what it is.
I don’t believe posters are questioning the amount they gave Huberdeau as much as they signed him at all. But many are understanding the difficulty of moving $84MM worth of contract.

I dunno, personally I see Huberdeau bouncing back next year and if he is getting a point per game or so, it’s not really that much of an overpay (maybe a little, but not like end of the world stuff). It’s the length that is maybe a bit troubling. We shall see, but the nice thing is at least Huberdeau acts like a professional and I think will at least work as hard he can generally speaking.

Compared to Kadri, he was professional
But that big a drop never looks good
The only way for him to restore his status is to prove he can do it again quickly

Didn't see this posted ...
Super interesting scout written look at Huberdeau and why things aren't working in Calgary.
