The funniest thing about this is the people who are most likely to call Nenshi "spendshi" and hate him for the spending his does are probably some of the hardest on him for actually trying to not let the taxpayers of this city get bent over like they do in other cities on arena deals.

Anyway, Bettman obviously hasn't given up on the market while bending over backwards for Phoenix. He's made the very same arguments in Phoenix for the very same reasons - to try and pressure civic authorities into ponying up cash.

Much like other NHL markets, the Flames are in no danger of relocating until there is no longer a group willing and able to own a team in the market. The BOG would never approve such an application.

EDIT: read up on this. Sounds more like just terrible business moves by the Molsons then anything. They sold the thing and then the new owner sold it back to them 8 years later for three times the price. So there wasn't an immediate appreciation in value, but it clearly happened.
