The #Oilers will continue to be a three man bench - Manny will come down from the press box for the third period to begin with and Todd is open to a four man bench. Trent will work with the defencemen. Gulutzan will work both ends of the bench making adjustments.

Isn't that the head coach's job?

Sounds like McLellan is on thin Ice , and Oilers have their replacement for him in place.

That would be amazing. Hopefully not in a careful what you wish for sense but really, how could GG as the head coach make things better? No chance.

I'm paraphrasing here, but McLellan talks about GG. I imagine this is GG in the interview:

Of all the possible reasons one might hire Gulutzan, I would have to think that making adjustments on the bench is absolutely the very last one.

Edmonton is no good.

Against general forum sentiment, I think these are good hires for the Oilers, unfortunately.

Was it Gulutzan’s success in Dallas, Vancouver or Calgary that you think is strongest? :-)

Edit: oh, I get it. Good * for the Oilers *. Right. Low bar

Do we all really think the coaching was the big problem with the Flames? GG and company shat the bed, but the Flames are not a very good team atm.

Definitely sounds like there won’t be many adjustments then. I’ve never seen a more pigheaded, stubborn coach in my life (seriously).

Yes, I honestly do think it was the majority of the problem.

very happy for Viveiros to see him get an NHL job. Been a bumpy ride for him and I never thought he'd get to this level, given that he spent most of his playing and coaching days in Austria, both for clubs and our national team.

too bad it's the Oilers though. Good luck to him on a personal level, I've always liked him a lot ... him joining that no good McShelbyville up there kind of sucks.

I just realised a strange coincidence:

The Flames have been four game sweeped 3 times in history. The first was to Edmonton, the second had Yawney directly responsible for the losing goal, and the third was with Gulutzan behind the bench.

What will happen when these all combine? No idea!

Yes. Yes I do.

The Flames were not a very good team? We had one of the League's top scorers on our forward line and on our back end, we got average goaltending.

Our special teams from last season deserve a special place in Hell.

I definitely place the failure to make the playoffs at the foot of the coaching staff and I'm not at all surprised they were turfed.

Hell, Gulutzan might have been working for the Oilers for the last two years in the first place based on his impressive resume against them.

People keep saying: The team wasnt that good, the players have to play, etc, etc.

And while there is truth to that, theres also ways to mitigate your weaknesses.

- The 4th line isnt that great? Stop trotting them out for 10+ minutes a night.
- Goaltending isnt working? Switch it up.
- Brouwer isnt producing despite many, many agonizingly infuriating opportunities? Switch it up.
- Powerplay not working? Change it up.

Furthermore, the big players did come to play. We got excellent seasons out of Johnny, Monahan, Ferland, Hamilton and Gio and even a really good season out of Smith.

The players played, but when the margin between victory and defeat is so thin you need your coach to help, not harm.

Gulutzan is the King of NeverChangestan.

Who’s gulutzan’s new Brouwer? Zack Kassian?

If viveiros is in Edmonton maybe the flames hire Sturm and Huska

Even if GG wasn't the problem, he wasn't a part of the solution.
