I did because Gulutzan was one of the other finalists and Green at that time didn't have stink on him. Green's Canucks teams were abysmal defensively and it's not all on the talent as the structure just wasn't there. He has over 300 games NHL coaching experience and a .478 win% so hiring him and expecting it to work out is almost a longer shot than it was to expect Gulutzan to work out for the Flames.

Pep was one who didn't really like Badger's ways. But maybe Crisp made him rethink things I bet.

With a new 35 year commitment and a building being be built, having your team do the same doesn’t sound/feel/look as risky.

If anything when that thing opens you want a reason to justify the 10-15% increase in season tickets pricing and 18$! Beers. Having a competitive product is a important factor in this…Just like having a competitive product was required to get the type of deal they did. Hence the mandate.

They’ll never say it’s changed but Conroy and Co has sold his vision to the brain trust.

Or he is still feeling the effects of when Conroy rang the puck off his temple.

I would love to see how Roy would be as a coach on this team if it were possible to have a time machine ready afterwards. Not worth the risk, but it would be interesting. I kind of feel the same way about Savard and Tanguay. On one hand, I would love to see it, but I also think it's risky and not a safe decision.

I sure hope it's a 2-3 year retool.

Friedman on the 32 thoughts says his educated guess is that the 4 in the mix left is Huska, Love, Green, and Todd Reirden.

Friedman says Reirden was a finalist for the Flames in a previous search as well as Green. Thinks Conroy is looking at guys they liked in the past.

Heard the Flames talked to Reirden recently

Friedman freely admits there could be others in the mix he is not seeing.

If they want to go with an experienced guy, I don’t hate Reirden.

Yeah, he is probably a guy due another HC spot somewhere soon. He didn't have terrible results before and has put in the time. Not a very old coach, but has been around. I have no idea what his coaching style is, but if they are looking at him, they must feel he could fit what Conroy wants to build here.

I don't hate any of those 4 mentioned.

Reirden was a top powerplay coach?

Makes sense to look at him plus hes working with elite stars like Ovechkin, Crosby, Malkin his entire coaching career in the NHL who have produced into their 30's.

Cant hate that one.

Green though gross. Send him home asap.

It makes sense to do a hard re-tooling of the roster. I believe it's a solid idea to have a young core start making some big noise entering the new arena. Christening it with a solid team pushing that's 3xciting to watch.

A little bit more on Todd Reirden:

https://www.nhl.com/penguins/news/pe...ch/c-335313730

Quote:
Since becoming an NHL coach in 2010-11, Reirden holds a 564-262-85 record and a .667 points percentage. He has helped his team to the postseason as either head or assistant/associate coach for 12-consecutive seasons (PIT - 2011-14, 2021-22; WSH - 2015-20), a feat no other NHL coach (head/assistant/associate/goalie) has accomplished.

In 12 NHL seasons as an NHL coach, Reirden has two Stanley Cup championships (2009, PIT; 2018, WSH), nine 100-point campaigns in nine 82-game seasons and 66 playoff wins in 12 postseason appearances. His teams have ranked in the NHL's top-5 for power-play percentage in seven seasons, and have finished in the top-10 for goals-against average in six seasons.

Before making the jump to the NHL, Reirden spent three years with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins from 2008-10 as both an assistant coach and head coach.

He had no problems winning in the regular season for the Capitals and largely got fired for lack of playoff success. I wonder why he's not been on the radar of other teams with vacancies the past few years as his results have been solid.

Thats my preference. If Love isn't HC he better be an assistant

If I were to take today's Barnburner at face value, it going to be Love HC, Tanguay ASC and Huska.

They really painted that picture in their talk with Serivalli.

They also said they expect this thing wrapped up as early as today.

Reirden is an interesting little wrinkle. I hoped it would be him when they hired Gulutzan.
