Rangers sign Kevin Hayes avoiding arbitration (1 yr, $5.125 mil)
Elliotte Friedman
@FriedgeHNIC
NYR signs Kevin Hayes for one year at just over $5M
Going to be interesting season for Hayes who is UFA after this season.

45 points for an RFA is worth over 5M right now?
Guess it was more goals than assists. Same production as Neal also I suppose.

Pretty much yeah, if you can get 25+ goals you're going to make more than 5M.
Gone are the times that the best players are making 7M. Now the best make 11M. His old teammate Miller, Toffoli, Galchenyuk, Hertl, Johnson to a lesser extent, lots of comparables.

Well yeah... gone are the times of a $40million salary cap.

Additionally, I actually think Hayes is capable of 60. He's pretty a underrated talent in my opinion.

I figured he would get this on a 5-6 year deal. Likely a prime rental next deadline

Rangers have some pretty solid guys in their prime for a rebuild:
Zibadejad (25), Namestnikov (25) Hayes (26), Krieder (27) and Zuccerello (30)
That makes it easier for their young guys and prospects to fit in:
Buchnevich, Chytlil, Lias Andersson and Howden.
They have their top-4 Shattenkirk, Staal, Skeji and Brendan Smith and a boot-full of top d-men prospects (some what like the Flames except with room at the #5-7 spots in the NHL)
Lundqvist apparently was asked if he wanted to be traded and he choose to stay with the Rangers.
9.5 M in cap space gong into this season and 25.4 M for next year.

Why only one year? Seems like a bad deal for Hayes, no?

Not terrible pieces, but really lacking any sort of star quality. I wouldn't want Staal or Smith in my top 4 though. With Lundqvist aging as well they still have some huge holes to fill. They won't be a bottom feeder, but I think playoffs aren't very likely.

Of note, all of those guys are UFAs within two years except Zibanejad.

That's a terrible top 4. Staal has regressed since his injury, Smith is bad. Both have terrible contracts and would be buyout candidates on any team looking to compete.
Not sure if that was the point of your post, but you really show how bleak things look for the Rangers. An average at best prospect pool, one forward signed long-term, a defensive core with two very bad contracts, and a goalie who's just good enough to maybe keep them from being a lottery team - but also a NMC that prevents from moving him.
It's the Rangers, so it could be a completely revamped team by 2022 if they attract all the upcoming UFA stars but that has to be the most bleak looking team from top-to-bottom in the league.

Didn't Brendan Smith get waived and end the season in the AHL last season in the first year of his 4-year, $17 million deal?

Yeah, but that's only because Marc Staal has a NMC so he couldn't be waived and join him there. :P

If he is has a poor season it will cost him a lot of money. On the other hand if he can get 25 goals again it will pay off huge during unrestricted free agency next off-season.

More importantly, gives him a chance to rectify his mistake of not signing to play with Gaudreau in the first place by signing with the Flames next year:
Gaudreau-Monahan-Hayes
Tkachuk-Lindholm-Neal
Bennett-Backlund-Jankowski
X-Ryan-Czarnik
Buyout Brouwer, trade Frolik. Play with 8 centers.

He'll be a UFA next year. If they had gone to arbitration, he would have only received a one-year contract too.
If this was what they settled on for a one-year deal, he must have been asking for a lot more on a multi-year deal.

Considering what Hayes got on a 1-year deal, I would be hesitant to sign him long term and end up with a Lucic-like deal. $5 million is already too much for 40 points IMO
