Bought my Traeger Pro Series 34 smoker grill yesterday. Any tips or comments for a newbie? The app has some excellent recipes and I know enough to get started. Will this replace my barbecue?

Bought an Uuni 3 pellet fire pizza oven this last weekend. Holy he77, compared to BBQ fired "ovens" this thing is next level. Got up to over 900 degrees in less than 10 minutes and was able to bang off a bunch of properly cooked (aka puffy w/ bit of charring ) neopolitan pizzas. Key now will be dialing back the heat for different cooks......and earning back the $400 sticker price

Where is everyone buying their Traeger rubs? Was hoping to try it out this weekend and want to use the proper stuff first.

Make them. Don't buy them. Everyone I have seen is caked full of sodium. Buying the ingredients in bulk you can get 10 times more the same price, and you control the ingredients.

I do all my own rubs. Trust me, you will appreciate it much more.

There are recipes on line everywhere.

I thought it would be easy to find; most I see are in the $70 and up price range.
Not sure if anybody cares, but I ended up buying this for the firepit:

The thing is way more solid than I was expecting; it weighs several pounds. I'm pretty sure it can support my cast iron frying pan. Now to see how much I can cook over the open fire this weekend.

It shouldn’t have an issue supporting the pan. It does say chrome shelf however so I will be interested in how it handles the heat of open flame. I would assume cooking directly on it would be rough as food would stick something terrible given how well chrome conducts heat and transfers it. Not all chrome is created equal and some is great for cooking (think chrome plated griddles in restaurants) but others are highly toxic like chrome IV.

Yeah I'm not sure I would be cooking on a wall shelf, but good luck.

Hmmm, seeing grill in the description I thought it was a replacement for the warming rack in a BBQ. However I see where you guys are coming from; that this could be more shelving than cooking surface.

I may have to re-think this.

Why not something like this? We've used lots of these over the years and they work great, and theres plenty of different ones to choose from

Added to my smoker/Q collection the other day with an awesome Kijiji find. Smoking some of my Elk roast on it today to see how she does! Now have a trusty Napoleon gas grill, a cabinet electric smoker, a big Kamado and a Pellet grill at my disposal. The Kamado is an awesome smoker but does take some tending to, and super long smokes are a bit tougher to add chunks to without alot of organization, but it gets to 7-800 degrees and is an amazing grill. The pellet is great for the long minimal effort smokes, and I got it for literally next to nothing barely used! Its a (cabelas) rebranded Camp Chef DLX, so has the hopper chute and the firebox trapdoor which are indispensable, probe function which I wouldn't use anyhow, and the low/high smoke plus the whole range to 500.

Looking at getting a new BBQ, what are your thoughts? Nothing too big or too fancy, I'm really leaning towards a napoleon LEX485RSIB natural gas grill. Just wondering if there are any strong opinions about it.

After 7 years of my trusty Broil King - a stay at a VRBO condo that had a Weber convinced me to upgrade. I swore only to do so if I got a great deal on one and fortunately a big box store was happy to give me clearance pricing on a Weber Summit S-470 to clear up some room. Was about $1000 off by the time the free delivery and cover was taken into account. Made it close to Napoleon pricing which was the realistic alternative.

Grease dripping management is way better which should help with flareups as it'll be easier to clean. I've removed the smoker box until I need it and bought the little bars off the guy on eBay that does custom replacements. I've also bought the griddle accessory which has been awesome for breakfasts!

This is my current arsenal of grilling. Although the Traeger is heading back to Costco this weekend, not even a year old and it’s on fan #2 and won’t break the 360 degree mark even after infinite cleanings of the fire pot and heat probe very very disappointed in its performance. I also have one of the smaller Bronson Treagers at my cabin which is a great little unit that seems to get hotter and create more smoke than the Pro 34. Seems the fire pot is the same in both units which makes no sense to me since one is 50% larger.

I have since ordered a Rec Tec Bull to replace it which should be waiting for me when I head to my place in Montana next weekend.
