Oh and the Final Fantasy library is so large that they've made two 3DS games out of it. I really enjoyed them myself, though you can scratch the hell out of the lower screen.

WTF even is this thread? You people are terrible at this. Uematsu is the alpha and omega of video game music. I came in here fully assuming that, like, fifteen or twenty tracks would have been posted by this point from various FF's and that I'd have to tack on a couple from Chrono Trigger before moving on to run down the top ten Sonic the Hedgehog themes from the Genesis run (which I note, incidentally, are also conspicuously absent here). Instead, there's a sort of offhand mention of the greatest game music composer ever at the tail end of a post and a video link to maybe the tenth best song in his fifth best game, music wise? Good lord. Here, this is at least a crash course in Final Fantasy.

You all disappoint me to no end.

Anyway, I'd have said without a doubt that the game with the best score ever is still FF6, until I played Nier:Automata this year. Now I'm torn. I think Nier has the best music, I don't know if it takes the mantle for score - the difference being that Nier uses four different versions of every track in the game to suit different atmospheres so there's no way you could get anything close to the musical experience of playing the game from listening to a soundtrack. But here, nonetheless, is the live concert version of most of the songs.

... And I still didn't even talk about Sonic. Seriously, guys, get it together. Yeesh.

Have you listened to the original soundtrack? The way they arranged the songs is almost perfect IMO. You get a bit of all of the pieces strung together beautifully. I actually looked for soundtrack version of City Ruins on Youtube as an example but could only find chunks from the game.

Did you read my post? I included Hydro City Act 2 in honorable mentions!

I left off anything recent (Sonic Mania, Nier Automata and Celeste all immediately come to mind) because I want to see how they hold up years from now before proclaiming them a favorite of mine. Those games do have my favorite soundtracks of the last few years for sure, though.

Well, a bunch of tracks in Sonic Mania are re-cycled from the old games, or altered versions. And yes, Hydrocity 2 is a popular choice....

along with Flying Battery Zone...

and Chemical Plant Zone...

and Ice Cap Zone.

I think Lava Reef Zone is enormously underrated...

... as is Acquatic Ruin Zone.

A Deus Ex: Human Revolution mention! Sweet, I am a HUGE fan of that games soundtrack.

Some others from the game I loved which makes great background music also for relaxing.

The Wing Commander themes were always really good and tried to give you a star wars type feel to the game, especially in the first one with the fighter scramble.

You played L2? I started it with my brother and a few friends back in open beta (2004?) and played it hardcore until maybe 6-7 years ago when it started to become stale (server mergers, P2W items). Last logged in a year ago (probably for the last time). I was on Devianne, then Chronos after the server merges.

NCSoft does put out great soundtracks though. I liked L2's but I found Aion's even better. Some of the most epic songs ever are in that game.

All the town and field themes were good on L2 but the first time I heard this after taking a castle on L2 was the most memorable for me.

And a couple epic Aion songs

I could probably post 20 songs that give me goosebumps from this game lol

I don't know if anyone else played Skullmonkeys but me but it was one of my favorite platformers of all time.
The quirky music fit the game perfectly.

The first time I discovered a secret room, I was beaming as the song progressed. I imagine this is how a Deadpool game soundtrack would have went if it was made back then.

Can't look up videos right now, but off the top of my head I really loved Fallout 3, The Wind Waker, Smash Bros Brawl, and any Pokemon games from Red and Blue - Diamond and Pearl.
