Yeah, Jacob Trouba is not an $8M dollar defenseman. Good grief.

Good grief. He wouldn't even be worth $8 million on a UFA contract.

There are a lot of guys with these lockout proof contracts - might we approach a point in two years where enough guys have significant dollars coming their way regardless of a work stoppage that the owners don't actually play that card?
It doesn't seem like there are any issues that warrant a stoppage - 50/50 revenue split is in place, the players want Olympics participation, and the owners want longer rookie deals.
Are we really going to have a lockout over escrow? A concept that seems less offensive and more poorly understood by the players, from where I sit.

This seems like about 1M too much, but I figured he'd sign for 5-6, so it's not horrible.

I feel like Gardiner's contract will be Brodie's comparable. Less term.and less money for sure.

Yeah there's a lot of similarities with the players and their situations. I do think Gardiner is a victim of becoming UFA the same time some big name RFA contracts expired as a lot of teams have been paralyzed.

Off-topic, but I was on CapFriendly to see what Trouba's previous cap hit was and saw that Vegas has an RFA named Jimmy Schuldt with a cap hit of 6.5675M. Who the heck is Jimmy Schuldt and why was his cap hit so high?!

CAP HIT: This contract is a 1 year ELC that was signed after the start of the season, and is therefore subject to an increased cap hit value as explained in the FAQ

You figured he'd sign for $5M-$6M, and $8M is about $1M too high?
That's a $2M-$3M difference, which 33%-60% more?
That's a big deal.

It's way too much money, ~10% of the 2019/2020 salary cap on Jacob Trouba. Good player by 8 million AAV, dear lord.

That's too much money, lockout and expansion proof and now they are paying 5 middling D a whole lot of money.
