Icon35 Islanders re-acquire Ryan Nugent-Hopkins

BROOKLYN---The New York Islanders announced on Thursday night that they have acquired forward Ryan Nugent-Hopkins (74 OV) from the Minnesota Wild in exchange for first- and second-round picks in the 2020 CPHL Entry Draft, forward Nico Sturm, and forward Nils Hoglander.

The move comes hours after the Islanders dealt winger David Perron (72 OV) to the Ottawa Senators in exchange for Hoglander and a first-round pick, assets which are both now the property of the Wild.

"Building good teams begins with having strength down the middle," said GM TheScorpion. "Two years ago, we acquired Eric Staal to be that star piece, and he gave us two excellent seasons of hockey.

"Now, acquiring Ryan, we feel that we have three terrific centremen who can operate effectively at both ends of the rink."

Nugent-Hopkins joins Islanders veterans Mikko Koivu (70 OV) and Bryan Little (69 OV) to solidify the centre-ice position in Long Island. Max Pacioretty (71 OV), Ilya Kovalchuk (70 OV), Brandon Pirri (69 OV), and Michael Grabner (68 OV) form a tentative team on the flanks, but TheScorpion acknowledges that work is yet to be done.

"We think that our wings could be stronger," he said. "We like the guys we have, but we think they might be better suited to play on second and third lines instead of on top units. We're actively looking for upgrades, and we're prepared to dip into our prospect pool to find them."

As of this publication, the Islanders' prospect pool includes Vladislav Firstov (#42 pick, 2019), Jeremy Bracco (79 points in 75 AHL games in 2018-19), goaltender Pavel Francouz (76 OV, .918 AHL rookie SV%), Eetu Tuulola, Cam Dineen, Luke Green, Dmitry Voronkov, Tyce Thompson, Viktor Lodin, and Mark Kastelic.

The Islanders would like to thank the Wild for the deal.

I like RNH but feel like I can afford to give him up. Unprotected picks are becoming very hard to acquire - and, with all due respect to the Flames, I think they stand a good chance of being in the lottery.
So that was the key to the package.
