Default CPU overheating too easily.

So my CPU has been recently overheating causing my computer all of a sudden. This happened 3 times already and I'm thinking it's because I need a better CPU cooler. Any suggestions?

Btw, it only overheats when I'm playing games such as League of Legends an SCII at the moderate settings.

Are you overclocking it?

If you are, then tone it back a bit or, as you said, get a better cooler.

If you aren't, chances are the cooler is probably not seated properly. Best thing to do would be to take it off, clean off the old thermal paste and put on some new, then pop it back on.

Nope, I'm not overclocking anything.. I'm probably going to get a new cooler anyway.. but I'm surprised that it overheats so easily since I don't really play any games that require high power.

Happen to have pets? I know with my laptop the cat fur destroys it, need to give it a good clean every once in a while.

And if not, still might want to make sure the vents aren't obstructed as well somehow.

When is the last time you took the case apart to be cleaned?

The problem more then likely will lie there, use an air compressor and a spray nozzle or those cans of compressed are and clean all the fans and heatsinks out.

Even with no pets and raised above the carpet I need to clean mine out every 3 months. Take good care of it and it will take care of you.

Like has already been mentioned, if the problem has just popped up after using it with no issues for a while, you have to clean it.

My bet is the fans are all full of dust.

Compressed air is the way to go.

It's also possible one of the fans has conked out.

As well, are you certain it's the CPU? Your videocard likely has fan (if you are using a dedicated card that is), and that might need to be cleaned or replaced as well.

If that's the case, I would just buy a new videocard.

If in fact it's your CPU and you want a new cooler, unless you are a) tech savvy, or b) own a case that as an access cut out on the rear side for the CPU, make sure you buy a cooler that doesn't require a rear mounting bracket, otherwise you may be stripping apart your PC to install the cooler.
