Icon42 Bouwmeester collapses on bench. UPD: has surgery to implant an ICD

https://twitter.com/user/status/1227437525867925508

Eric Stephens @icemancometh
An NHL security just told me that the St. Louis Blues and Anaheim Ducks have agreed to postpone tonight's game. Obviously major concern regarding Jay Bouwmeester.

John Shannon @JShannonhl
Just watched Boumeester's last full shift...1:20, nothing to note...six seconds after he goes to bench, he collapses.

News Update

https://www.nhl.com/blues/news/bouwm...re/c-315058118

Quote:
St. Louis Blues President of Hockey Operations and General Manager Doug Armstrong announced this morning that defenseman Jay Bouwmeester has undergone a successful Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator (ICD) procedure at UC Irvine Medical Center in Anaheim.

The procedure, which restores the heart's normal rhythm, was performed by the cardiology team of the UCI Cardiology Department, headed by Chief Cardiologist Dr. Pranav M. Patel.

Currently, Bouwmeester is under the care of Dr. Patel as well as an expert team of UCI Electrophysiologists, including Dr. Michael Rochon-Duck and Dr. David Donaldson.

Upon approval of release by the UCI Cardiology Department, Bouwmeester will be flown back to St. Louis and monitored by Barnes Jewish Hospital and Washington University physicians.

The Blues will provide an update on Bouwmeester's status early next week.

Hope he's okay. I loved him in his first little bit in YYC-he signed a jersey for me! Glad he got a ring.

geez... that stuff is really scary.

Hoping Jaybo is ok...

reminds me a little of Brodie's incident... presumably they are continuing to run tests and monitoring him... he has been playing really well, so hopefully it wasn't anything serious

Whatever happened seems to be quite serious. Fans who were at the game are saying they had to do CPR and everything. Just awful. Apparently he was blinking and everything as he was being taken off though, so that's something.

Hope it's just lack of fuel or something like that. Very scary.

Ducks fans at the game from the Reddit thread:

I’m 3 rows behind the bench and thought I just watched him die. He literally gets off for a shift, and just falls lifelessly. Thank god the medics got to him in like 30 seconds. He was blinking as they took him to the locker room. Scary ####. Whole building is shook.

They did compressions and what looked like an AED
Quote:
Can confirm they were pumping his chest. I saw a kick from him after about 10 or so pumps. Like a violent kick

The kick would have been the AED. Great to hear that he is awake and responding. Fast response from the medical team would mean everything.

Wow, that is really scary, I hope he recovers quickly and this isn’t an underlying issue that could end his career. Sad stuff.

That's scary holy crap if his heart did stop I guess you just never know when it may be your time to go glad he is awake on his way to the hospital though it must have been scary as hell for his dad being there in the building

Same thing happened to Jiri Fischer in a game 15 years ago. Fischer had to retire

His heart may not have stopped, the AED can be used to, say. reset a tachycardia

Bouw is a warrior, he'll get through this. Still very scary.
