I think the first couple of rounds had more to do with Burke. Speculate away.

Rumour on Eklund is that Laine is available for two firsts and a top 4 D.
With Gaudreau possibly returning a couple firsts from a team like New Jersey would it make sense to flip a couple firsts and Hanifin for Laine??
He is making 6.75 this year but then will likely be looking for at least 9.5 to 10 per I’d imagine.

fwiw nobody has less inside information on the Flames than Lavoie. He has been completely shut out after Hartley was fired.

Gaudreau and Ekblad as the basis for a trade I think could make sense.

One of the very few players in the league I'd be okay with seeing a hockey trade for.
To FLA: Johnny Gaudreau, Derek Ryan, 2020 1st (19th), 2020 2nd (49th)
To CGY: Aaron Ekblad, 2020 1st (12th)
Draft: Yaroslav Askarov, Anton Lundell or Seth Jarvis
Hanifin - Ekblad
Giordano - Andersson
Valimaki - Kylington
That's a pretty brilliant defensive group.

I don’t particularly like Laine for a number of reasons, but I really hate the thought of paying him that type of money.
That type of money needs to go to players who will be leaders in the playoffs. I don’t imagine Laine as that type of player.

I’m with ya on that one; if he was willing to sign for around 8 mill per I’d be interested but I can’t see that.

Unless he has heard from his sources for teams out East that the Flames are shopping Gaudreau. I agree he has no source out west.

Paying Laine that kind of money is a great way to mess up your team chemistry. He's a one dimensional player who should not be your highest paid guy.
Based on likely acquisition cost, along with his expected salary demands, I want no part of Laine whatsoever.

Laine does ring a lot of Thomas Vanek bells to me. Great scorer and fun to watch but you’re not going to go very far with him as your top guy.

And a completely #### forward group. This is a team that needs more talent up front, not less. There is nothing in the pipeline so if they trade Gaudreau it better be for a player with major upside up front, and not a defenseman and a magic bean spent on a goaltender or a forward with second or third line upside.

18,20+Severson?
Laine would be a good fit in NJ with their young centers.

I'd simplify the deal, as nice as it would be to move up it unnecessarily complicates the deal and you have to overpay to move up in the draft
To Florida: J. Gaudreau, O. Kylington
To Calgary: A. Ekblad, H. Borgstrom

Only if this is the only change that Treliving makes to the roster. Much of the impetus behind a Gaudreau trade is also connected for a lot of posters to signing Taylor Hall. If Hall is acquired that essentially replaces Gaudreau, and leaves a little extra room to also add more via free agency and other trades.

Barring a monster season, I highly doubt Laine gets that type of money.
Or is that the minimum for a tender offer?

If the Panthers decide to move Ekblad, they won’t downgrade their first round pick to do so.

Gaudreau + Ryan for Ekblad
19th + 49th for the 12th is a pretty normal move-up trade.

But what is the Panthers motivation to downgrade its first round pic plus if the Panthers move Ekblad one of the reasons is to save cap. It they wanted Johnny, it would be more like a Johnny plus the 49th for Ekblad, although I expect they would rather a younger top 6 forward with more control.

I see no reason why Florida would move their #1D for Gaudreau. They need to add more defense if anything. Also Ekblad has five years left on his deal vs. two with Johnny.
