A friend and I were having a conversation, what if your team got something like the 7 pick overall and both Drysdale and askarov were on the board, who would you take?

I take Drysdale over askarov. But I doubt Drysdale would be there at 7 so would take askarov

if I recall thats how the Flames ended up with Backlund - teams scared of him because of injuries in his junior career

Agree with this. No way Drysdale makes it to 7. Askarov can go in the 7-13 range. But as a Flame, I think I take him.

We need to solidify our future goaltending.

If he makes it to 12/13, I wonder if 19 and 50 gets it done to move up and pick him

Id be pretty pumped if the Flames not only burned their 1st round pick, but their 1st AND 2nd round picks on a Russian goalie.

/sarcasm

Askarov is always so in control. He looks just like Carey Price.

I did some looking up on the D men on Buttons poll list. Yeah Justin Barron screams Flames pick. I wouldnt be too upset but the rest of them, yeah no.

Still want one of those Right shor forwards or Amirov tbh. But if they reach (sort of) down for Barron, I'd be okay with that.

Something tells me he may go really high though. Slim pickins for D men and all.

Yeah, with the exciting group of forwards that will be available at our pick, it would be a little disappointing to see them draft a D-man. The last few picks of the first round and the second and third rounds are for Defense. Justin Barron is interesting though-he was pegged to be a high first-rounder, but didn't quite show his stuff, possibly due to injury.

Assuming we don’t get Askarov and if BPA are close, I’d want a center with our first rounder and a D man with our 2nd rounder and A goalie with our 4th rounder

Buttons poll list doesn't make sense. His list is all d-men. Most of them will be late first to early 2nd picks. Just because they have not drafted a d man in a while, doesnt mean they have to take one at 19.

As much as Askarov is appearing to be one of the next great goaltenders, I think the Oilers should avoid drafting him if he were to fall to t4th overall. While Askarov would fill a huge spot in the Oilers organization, there’s other, much larger holes that could be addressed through the first round of the draft.
In case anyone was feeling bad about any direction the Flames might take.

Has anyone organized the 1st round into tiers yet? I am interested to see what it looks like.

Plus, the fact that they haven't drafted a d-man in a long time shows that they are truly focused on drafting the BPA when their spot in the draft comes up.

I think that order is off, but the tiers look pretty good.
I would swap Lundell and Quinn. I don't think Guhle and Lapierre are very good, but a lot of people seem to have them around there. Lucas Raymond is a bit of a wild card.

Lapierre could be anywhere honestly. Biggest draft question mark since Kylington.

Personally I would have Jarvis in tier 3.

Lime is pretty close .

Personally tiers 4 and 5 are the same. Jarvis and Quinn should be 3. Thats about all I got to expand on that list.

After Askarov, I think the whole thing goes right off the conventional thinking rails. We are gonna see some crazy "deep pulls".

Like Justin Barron could resume his top tier stats and go top 10. Its gonna be a great draft but a wackey one.

I'll take a stab, everybody can weigh in:

Tier1:Lafreniere/Byfield/Stutzle

Tier2:Rossi/Raymond/Drysdale/Perfetti/Askarov

Tier3:Holtz/Lundell

Tier4: Sanderson/Jarvis/Mercer

Tier5: Quinn/Amirov/Holloway

Tier 6: Gunler/Schneider/Zary/Bourque/Guhle/Perrault/Lapierre/Foerster

Tier 7: Mysak/Grans/Wallinder/Brisson/Barron/Weisblatt/Poirier

Tier 8:Peterka/Reichel/Hirvonen/Kusnutdinov/Greig/Nybeck/Neighbors/Colangelo/Jurmo/Tuch/Mukhamadullin/Viro/Dufour

Just my opinion.

Edit: My apologies, I wasn't aware of HL's list-must've posted as I was typing...

Sanderson could be tier 3...I think he could be the top dman that goes. Was listening to a podcast today and who described it as do you want Ryan McDonough (Sanderson) or Kevin Shattekirk (Drysdale)
