The trap is only good when you're winning with it. Even then, you get basically a few minutes of real excitement per game.
That's going to be torture for them when the wheels fall off. Edmontonians should get some other hobbies lined up for spring.

I listened to the first 2 periods on radio, and caught the last period on tv. Thought the oilers had a pretty good game plan, and credit to them for sticking to it. Boring as hell, but let’s face it, that’s their only option.
Not worried by the loss. Flames had a good effort considering all that’s going against us. I think the oilers will fall back to earth soon as teams learn how to beat their trap. They’re certainly far from impressive.

This. No one likes losing especially to the Oilers but last years Stanley Cup champs had runs where they went 1-3-1, 1-2-2, 3-4-2, while losing to teams like Arizona, Carolina x 2 , Philly x 2, Florida, Vancouver, Buffalo and Detroit. These games happen but keep you’re eye on the big picture, they’ve looked very good for most of the season and elite once Smith re-discovered his game.

I didn't think the Flames would miss Gio and much as they have on the PP.
I know he's the best defenseman in the league but I never had him as the reason why the Flames 1st unit always seems to make it so easy to get in, set up, and move the puck around.

James Neal can show up anytime now. It’s getting bloody ridiculous how invisible he is!!

I can't really argue with the no goal call.
You can see Koskinen reach out with his glove to make the save and he hits Peluso with his glove. With Peluso's right skate behind Koskinen in the crease, that's not allowing the goalie to make the save.

Yah he's such a ####ty hockey player. I can't believe that we are forced to watch him night in night out.
Give it a break. First in the west and all you can do is complain about Johnny? Lol

And they just had to replace him with Brodie who should never be on the PP especially the first unit. Would have preferred Hanifin in that spot and the kids on the second unit or if you must have Brodie there. That one shot block just pissed me off. First unit was finally moving it around and he just shoots it right in the shin pads of the oiler and out the zone it went. He’s just awful at getting pucks through. Definitely will be nice to have Gio back next game.

Flames were tired.
I'll give the Oilers credit - they've learned that having two d-men back actually works. Soon their d-men might learn how to skate backwards.

There was one play, I think it was in the 3rd...Gaudreau had the puck behind the net forever, just looking for someone to pass to out front. Neal is there covered. He just sits there for a while, then slowly retreats to the sideboards, then goes for a skate way up to near the blue line. Like wtf man. This is your chance to find a way to get open in the slot and have one of the best players in the game get you the puck.

Honest question, how much time had transpired from the time Hamonic played the puck to when Lucic hit him? The threshold is 0.6 seconds, I’d be curious.

It is hard to believe that Jake Virtanen is going to end up being a better offensive hockey player than Sam Bennett. Unrelated to the game, but it just dawned on me for some reason.

That is not all on Bennett. Lots of Tkachuk’s passes have not been connecting like they often do.

with his stick at his side not in a shooting position, backing into hanifin at the left point position and then drifting away from the play towards centre ice.
for the first 20 games, my opinion on neal was 'whatever'.
it's been 31 games and he has 3 goals.
Colour me legitimately concerned about what the next 4 years after this look like.

Caught most of the 3rd period after getting home from work. Jesus f'n christ, Hitchcock hockey is boring as hell, and it's more than a little pathetic that it's the only way they can get points. And of course McDoofus provided all of their offence tonight. Gee, what a shocker.
Sadly, Hitch's trap system might actually get the Oilers into a wildcard spot if they keep pulling wins out of their arses like this.
I didn't catch the whole game, but the Flames looked pretty gassed. 3 games in 4 nights and missing some of their best players, including our top shutdown D man, captain, and PP quarterback. Flames were bound to lose at least one of these two games, so I'm not that upset by tonight's result. I would have preferred they had lost to the Preds and beat the Oilers instead, but whatever.
Edmonton fans can say whatever they want, but this game will always have a huge asterisk beside it, as the Flames were very clearly not at their best.
