Default UPD post #250: Giordano suspended 2 games for kneeing. Lomberg suspended 2 games

News Update

NHL Player Safety
@NHLPlayerSafety
Calgary’s Mark Giordano has been suspended for two games for kneeing Minnesota’s Mikko Koivu.

Lomberg suspended additional game

NHL Player Safety @NHLPlayerSafety
Calgary’s Mark Giordano will have a hearing today for kneeing Minnesota’s Mikko Koivu.

NHL Player Safety @NHLPlayerSafety
Calgary’s Ryan Lomberg has been automatically suspended for one game and Coach Bill Peter has been fined $10,000 under rule 46.22, Instigating in the Final Five Minutes of Regulation.

NHL Player Safety @NHLPlayerSafety
In addition, Calgary’s Ryan Lomberg will have a hearing today for a legal line change for the purpose of starting an altercation.

Elliotte Friedman @FriedgeHNIC
Penalty for this is a 10-game suspension, if league goes that route

Elliotte Friedman @FriedgeHNIC
Let me fix that: because it was a legal line change and not an illegal one, not mandatory 10. Here are some others...

Hearing means minimum of how many games?

Ugh. Was the knee really that bad that it warrants a hearing?

Throw the book at Lomborg and Peters, they really could have waited 8 days to extract the pound of flesh from Dumba.

Minimum is still zero - he could conceivably convince them.

But what it means is that he can get more than 5 games or $5K. A phone hearing means a max of those two.

ETA: What sureloss says if it's a phone hearing

Was lomberg already on the ice when the hit happened? And didn't the hit and subsequent fight happen on the same shift?

Do the Flames have any defensemen left? What does Saturday look like sans Giordano?

I think the issue is two fold.

Its not in the first time Gio has injured a player when his knee was the principle point of contact.

And lets face it if a "star player" is hurt the league is going to look more closely.

What's Lomberg supposed to do - say "no" when asked to go on?

It should be a rule about Peters, although he didn't necessarily send him out to specifically attack Dumba. He could have just figured something might happen, so better put him out (instead of, say, Gaudreau). Especially if Dumba or someone else decides to run at someone else.

Anything more than one game for Giordano would be a joke

And yet if the refs had called the empty net trip on Minny which should have resulted in an automatic goal for the Flames and game over, none of this would have happened. So once again, incompetence of refereeing causes a team and players to pay for it. Sad.

If they look at things Gio did that were not the subject of previous discupline, that's an appealable result IMO. It's not in the rulebook. Only previous DPS stuff is considered a player's "history". And even then there's a time limit.

Whatever will we do without Lomberg for 11 games!!!!

I’m not going to defend Gio’s play either. Sloppy defending (no intent) that led to an injury. Not the first time he has taken out someone’s knee due to bad positioning either.

I hate to continually draw comparisons with the Oilers, but Lomberg should get the same fine that Lucic got for essentially the same play. I know that wont happen, but a little consistency would be nice.
