Yeah. Quick and the Dead was underrated too IMO.

Re-watched it tonight and it might be my favorite western. And the cast is unreal. You remember Kurt Russell, Val Kilmer, Sam Elliott, Michael Biehn, Powers Boothe, Bill Paxton, but then you have guys like Jason Prisetley, Billy Bob Thornton, Thomas Haden Church and a very young Michael Rooker popping up. Even Terry O Quinn from Survivor .
Kilmer should have at least been nominated for best supporting actor. This was the year that Tommy Lee Jones won for the Fugitive, which was a fun role, but not really nuanced at all. Other nominees were Leonardo DiCaprio (What's eating Glen Gulutzan), Ralph Fiennes (Schindler's List), John Malkovich (in the line of fire), and Pete Postlethwaite (In the Name of the Father).
I would say that Fiennes should have won. And I would have Kilmer #2 just ahead of Postlehwaite.
That gives me an idea for a thread.

There are some good movies and accomplished actors nominated in that category. That movie turned Tommy Lee Jones from a character actor to a star.

I’m being slightly funny about it but I’d watch it over Tombstone 10/10 times. Tombstone’s great though, Kilmer carries it like Ledger did with Batman. I also much prefer the Spaghetti Western genre. 1968’s The Mercenary is better than most anything anyone else made and I appreciate that the Italians weren’t held back by a dumb code of ethics.
Almost every US made western before The Wild Bunch may as well be a Disney movie. No thanks

Tombstone and The Fugitive are two of my "have to stop and watch" movies. They're both such fun movies. And while I agree with all the praise Jiri gives Tombstone I disagree with Tommy Lee Jones in Fugitive, it's an insanely good performance and has a nuance to it. His character is thinking throughout, he's always processing.

I have watched almost zero Westerns, unless you count Back to the Future 3 or Logan. Keep the recommendations coming, adding some films to my que.

The Outlaw Josey Wales is my favourite western, and one of my favourite movies in general.

I would recommend Unforgiven. Just watched it again recently and it's very good. It's the anti-western western.

The best western ever made is Unforgiven - just the lighting and cinematography alone would place it upper echelon but the script is also top tier and it deserved best picture.
The best spaghetti western ever made is Once Upon a Time in the West - largely for the sort of Beowulf-esque meta-narrative about time coming for all things, including the Western genre itself, and probably Morricone's best score (gotta love that leitmotif goodness). It's also frequently beautifully shot and has one of the best opening sequences of any genre film.
If you want to go back and enjoy the "old school" simple westerns of the 50's, go with Red River, Shane, and High Noon - not necessarily in that order.

I once read that Costner got the role in Silverado because the director felt bad for cutting his scene in The Big Chill.
Glad this western chat inspired Nadal Fan to check out the genre.
Nadal Fan, If you don't add the big three Clint Eastwood spaghetti westerns to your list, you'll do yourself an injustice.
A Fistful of Dollars (1964), For a Few Dollars More (1965), and The Good, the Bad and the Ugly (1966).
You also really need The Magnificent Seven.

Any western Eastwood is in is worth watching. Outlaw Josey Wales, Hang 'Em High, High Plains Drifter not mentioned yet here.

No, I haven't. I had been going through a bunch of older Westerns a few months back and watched a number of them: Tombstone, the Good the Bad and the Ugly, Once Upon a Time in the West, etc.
But the list of good ones seemed so daunting and I quickly fell out of my Western mood. I'll probably revisit more of the ones I haven't seen this summer however.
