Flames Mike Smith will replace Jon Quick at the All Star game

John Shannon @JSportsnet
All Star notes:
-Sounds like Brayden Point will replace Victor Hedman on Atlantic Team.
-Jon Quick is going to pass on the weekend. Replacement will be Mike Smith.
-Even if suspended, Marchand is expected to be in Tampa.

That is so well deserved. Smith has been the MVP for this team since game #1. I know he won't get a Vezina nid but he should push into the top 5 in voting if he keeps this pace.

Treliving did so right bringing Smith in.
Congrats Smithy!

Agreed Dammage79. But in my mind its a two horse race for the Vezina this year. Hopefully with Hedman being a bit banged up, Vasilevsky's numbers will slide a bit and Smith can continue to impress and end up winning the race over the next few months.

If the Flames make the playoff's, can they award the Hart to two players on the same team?..

I'd rather him stay home and rest up for the final stretch.

I was thinking the same thing.

A polite 'No Thank You' is in order.

Yeah take a pass Smith. Fully deserved honor but goalies are the last guys you want of your team at all star games. Breakaway competitions, and the 3 on 3 shooting gallery, all prime for a groin tweak.

nah.. he should be there. He gets to goof around and play a bit in the skills and 10 minutes in a fun game with no pressure. He make some good passes too.

You could tell from the skill competition that he also likes having his kids around the rink-- I bet being able to share something like this with his family is a draw.

Smith should have been there ahead of Quick to begin with IMO, not being a homer.

When is the last time this happened?

Every All Star weekend I have ever seen features goalies that play like cardboard cutouts.

Selfishly I would rather him rest but if he is up for it and is excited about it I'm happy for him to be recognized.

Exactly. There's a reason goalies get lit up at the ASG.

So Quick gets punished for skipping the game, right?

Rick DiPietro became a punchline after this. It's the only one I can think of, but it's a big one.

You can even hear him go "It's my ####ing hip"

Should serve a one game suspension but since he plays for the Kings I'm sure the NHL will be lenient.

Shannon says Quick either sits out tonight or the first game back after the break.

They made Crosby sit out when he skipped the all star game. Don't think anyone is getting let off for staying home.

That means he can't dress so they would need a 3rd goalie.
