Bubba is Albertan, so maybe that works in his favour.
Show up to camp next year wearing a "I heart Alberta beef" t-shirt and Darryl might develop a soft spot for him.

We talked to Phillips yesterday about Darryl — he said he has never spoken to Darryl but he played with Riley Sutter and knows Ron reasonably well. So, there's a possible connection.

What type of season does Phillips need to have that Seattle may be interested? I’m sure they are more likely to take someone more established but if Phillips continues this heater in the AHL, he could draw some attention.

Well, that sucks. Would he still be waiver ineligible? With Seattle choosing roster players off of 29 teams (six more than they can put on their roster), there is some incentive to select players, with future potential, that they can send down to the minors in the upcoming year.

imagine two expansion drafts where each team received $37M in expansion fees, and all you lose is a UFA and a former 6th round draft pick.

I think this thread has aged pretty well.
It has become more and more obvious that the Flames should recall Matthew Phillips.
Right handed, can play RW, has high end skill.
He's small, but oh well.

Seems like it would be worth a try for 5 games at this point. Dunno if he could be worse than Simon up there.
Maybe this is an example of the Flames learning from past mistakes and not rushing a player just to fill an organizational need. Maybe Bennett would have been a player if he spent a few years in the A.

He has to be better than Ritchie, at least.

I think Darryl is going to give the Ritchie experiment a few more games.
If they have a few more games like the Toronto game, he's going to have to change that up.
I think they have to give Phillips a try at that spot.
Move Ritchie down to the 4th line with Ryan, they had good chemistry.
I don't think taking Leivo out for Phillips is going to hurt the toughness or physical play too much. We saw Phillips throw a bigger hit last year than we've ever seen Leivo throw.

What is there to decide. No one is threatened by Ritchie, no one is threatened by Sean, and as a result they can just key in on Johnny. If he tries to push through it he gets plastered to the boards, if he doesn't cretins will accuse him of not being tough and pulling up. At least with a skilled and fellow nippy player they may actually back off the D as they rush.

How does a recall work this year? I know Stockton is playing in Canada but would he need to quarantine for a few days if he was recalled?

I would assume he would just have to pass 3 tests. Or what ever the amount is

Isn’t Phillips smaller than Gaudreau? I’d run that line all night.

That line badly needs a new winger. That player is not in the organization currently and needs to be acquired. Needed to happen over two years ago in fact.

I think it would be super cool Scorp if you could find a way to connect with Conroy on the subject of Matty Phillips. I remember reading a couple of articles about Conny and Phillips and he loved going to check in on the guy from what I remember and it could spin up some excitement around the prospect of calling him up for a look. Phillips also isn’t shy from hard nosed areas like behind the net or in the crease, he drives those areas and has his entire career in the dub and AHL. He might be a great player to call up because if he plays the game hard and the right way like Darryl preaches he can be an excellent example for the pros and really energize the core players to be better. No excuses.
Call him up please.

Gaudreau has 25 lbs on Phillips according to the Flames website.

Matthew Phillips was too small to play AAA.
Matthew Phillips was too small to play in the WHL
Matthew Phillips was too small to make an impact in the AHL
That's not the kind of player I write off without a look see.
Having said that sometimes you only have one shot at this. And if you move too quickly you stunt the growth because the player and organization see the player isn't ready.
But I wouldn't write him off.

Yeah but Gaudreau plays like a little man. Phillips is smaller but he actually plays gritty. He drives to the net and doesn't shy from physicality like Gaudreau does.

Sorry, this has nothing to do with your post.
However, you mentioned Conroy.. isn't it weird that Conroy is now technically one of Darryl Sutter's bosses? Weird.
