The original Xcom was an amazing game with a rapid skills acceleration that was sometimes impossible.

I remember throwing my mouse across the room when that one soldier that I had since the start who I had leveled and developed was killed by a lucky sniper shot by a freaking Grey. Or turned against me when an alien planted a egg in his chest.

So frustrating, but I loved that game, so spooly too between turns.

Isn't Perfect Dark, IIRC, virtually a ripoff of Goldeneye?

Super Mario Bros 3
Ocarina of Time
Final Fantasy VI

Not just fan favourites, but very likely the best games in their respective series, and among the very best games in their genres.

I beat it on hardcore mode and began to feel genuine anguish for all the soldiers who died under my command. Even learnt to protect my favourites by keeping a low level grunt on the squad who's only job it was to capture aliens. The odd grunt would do well enough to level up into a real team member, but mostly they were alien fodder. Brave young men and women standing up to fight the alien horde, only to have their lives callously thrown away by a commander who's interested in upgading tech as cheaply as possible.

Other perfect games:
Mario 64
World of Warcraft (the pvp system alone is a perfect game)
Starcraft
Rocket League
Portal 1&2
Divinity: Original Sin

Ultima Online post rep patch and pre Pub 14 or 16 whatever it was, was near perfection. Basically during the pre cast era, to me that was just about perfection in terms of a balanced PvP MMORPG. It was for the most part 100% skill based PvP. But didn't balance dexers, so some of the changes that came later helped it out. But I'd say late 98 to 2000 was pretty near perfection.

And don't get me wrong, I loved the Dread Lord days to, even though I was a victim more often than not, but it was not balanced in the slightest and made for a horrible experience for most players, so not perfect.

I think for console RPG's I would consider:

FF3 - I don't think this has ever been topped for the style of game it was, and please don't say FF VII. VII is not III.

Final Fantasy Tactics - there are a lot of games in this space, Shining Force, Tactics Ogre, Vandal Hearts, but FFT really just nailed it.

Shining Force - this is a pretty straight forward adventure, but as far as a tactical traditional fantasy RPG experience goes, I don't think you need to look any further. Eclipsed by FFT overall, however that doesn't mean it wasn't also perfect.

And then for computer:

Counter Strike - probably the best FPS of all time, and was a huge trailblazer for the genre.

Warcraft 3 - Just an awesome game. Great story, detail, characters all of it. Launched what is now one of the biggest MMO genres in MOBA's, and also led into WoW which was in itself a perfect game as well.

To me it will always be Super Mario 64. It was the game that crossed gamers from the 2D realm into the 3rd dimension. The first time using an analogue controller felt strange, but once mastered gave way to a completely new way of playing games. Every aspect of that game was groundbreaking and gave way to the types of games we play today. It was the game that completely revolutionized video games like no other game had done before, since, or ever will do in the future.

Also honorable mention to The Witcher 3. For me it was the first game that showed me true next-gen gaming and what games could be like. Not to mention the two amazing add-ons that extended the life of the main game beyond what most full games contain.

If by ripoff you mean spiritual successor, then yes. The same team made both games.

What would I consider perfect games? Really difficult to say, and hard to say "perfect" and not "favourite". I'd probably put these up as perfect, or near-perfect games:

Super Mario Kart. Executes everything it tried to do with perfection.

Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic misses the mark on no notable fronts.

Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence

Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare

I could see Ocarina of Time being considered perfect and others seem to agree, although I've never finished it.

Call of Duty 4 is a good call. It changed shooters and online gaming. Online shooters are still trying to recapture what COD 4 pulled off

Oh dude, finish it!

If you’ve fought Shadow Link already you’ve experienced the best moment of the game... but the end battle is great as well. I replayed it about 2 years ago, had a blast.

It’s my submission for this thread.

Mass Effect 2 is a game I can play over & over again and never get bored with. I really liked ME1, ME3 was okay but ME2 is just perfect to me.

Red Dead Redemption is a game I don't think I'll ever get sick of either.

Street Fighter II on Super Nintendo was my game when I was younger. I was basically unbeatable with Chun Li.

A few that I thought of already mentioned here (Ocarina, original X-COM, Final Fantasy Tactics). I'm gonna throw in Tie Fighter (only downside is linear missions with no branching) and Freespace 2. My gaming really slowed down after University but has there been any space combat sim that comes even close to Freespace 2?

I'll throw my hat into the "Knights of The Old Republic" camp.

It has great re-playable value too. You can choose different ways to do your character in terms of good vs evil and even skill distribution.

KOTOR was incredibly dynamic in its play.

I still remember the greatest moment was when I was called in to settle a family feud because two of the kids had married secretly, and I managed to ramp up both sides to the point where they slaughtered each other.

The sad moment when I turned to the Dark side and made the wookie kill his companion because he owed me a life debt.

Add on another game that was perfect for me in its time.

Tie Fighter - Great story, a ton of freaking content, a side story that was amazing. The flight engine was really good, you felt like you were flying a tie fighter. The sound and graphics for the time were top notch.

And flying on Vader's wing was awesome.

Resident Evil 4 on the Wii. I didn't particularly like the way it played on other consoles, but aiming and slashing with wiimote + walking with joystick, to me it just felt right somehow.
