I thought it was one of the best segments they have done myself. Great passion on a very polarizing subject amongst hockey fans

Preach on Lou, those guys who overrate the importance of the fancy stats are out to lunch IMO.
Oh I'm on board. Loubo is one of my favourite broadcasters.

That was just really bloody intense. Pat wasn't even really playing devil's advocate that hard, But Loubo definitely had a rant built up in defense of Russell and wanted to unload.

Loved it and agree with Lou. Pat being sensitive with the "those people" comments.

For a lot of people, Russell fails the eye test just as much as the analytics test.

Yeah I get the impression that Lou has been a powder keg ready to blow up on the subject. I hope GM's feel the same way and pay a pretty penny for him by Monday at 1pm

-clearing the puck along the glass successfully
-passing the puck to his forwards on their tape
-closing out gaps on the rush
-clearing the front of the crease
-taking the puck away from the opponent
-pinching for 50/50 battles in the offensive zone
-generating points on the PP

These are things Kris Russell cannot do at the level of a top 4 Dman.

But I genuinly hope there's a sucker out there like Loubo willing to pay a 1st or Drouin/Nichushkin class prospect for Him. So preach on Loubo!!!

Precisely. Arguably the worst defenseman in the NHL at controlling zone entries - he just has terrible gap control. He plays a style of game that might have been successful 15 years ago, but just doesn't work with the speed of today's game.

It's pretty funny that people have such strong opinions about Russell and advanced stats when the primary argument in his favor is counting how many blocked shots he has.

Agree

He does a lot of good in his own zone in terms of using his stick to break up plays, and blocks a lot of shots but IMO it masks his limitations.

Really poor in the corners and behind his own net, bad at controlling zone entries, does a bad job of blocking out, and makes poor decisions with the puck. It's these issues that lead him to be in his own zone all the time.

The fact that the guy is such a heart and soul player covers up a lot of the warts but the warts are still there.

Then it's magnified because this team is so soft and small overall (FWDs and Dman) that he doesn't get any protection for his weaknesses. I feel that Russell on L.A or Winnipeg with bigger guys surrounding him would look much better.

Russell gets a lot of hate on this board. he is a fantastic skater and will provide great depth to a team making a push for the playoffs, he may not be a full time top 4 defensemen but he has the ability to move up in your lineup without having a negative impact on the lineup

Why am I never listening to the radio when the guys lose it and get into an argument?

Yeah, Russell would be a really decent number 5 on a competitive team...in no way shape or form is he a top 4.

Renaud Lavoie said on Sportsnet 960 that he doesn't think the Flames or Oilers are in on Drouin.

Once the Flames traded for Shinkaruk I thought it killed the little hope I had we would steal Drouin from Tampa. Also I don't see the Flames trading or a player that is pulling the stunt Drouin did which is sit out until the trade happens.

I am okay with not being in on Drouin.

The Nichuskin rumors have me much more interested though.

Druin is an exciting prospect, but I prefer the Flames targeting a pick or large young winger.

We gotta move past this Drouin stuff. The guy is a chump.
We need goaltending and goaltending alone here...
